This was posted yesterday on Facebook by Custer County SAR.

During the 1st insertion of a CCSAR member, the subject was observed deceased on a 35 degree snow slope approximately 1,000 feet below the saddle of Challenger and Kit Carson. .....

So sad. My condolences to his family and friends.

This sounds like the area (I think Kirk Couloir) where others have descended in an attempt to not re-gain Challenger, only to get into trouble.

Four additional CCSAR members and one Chaffee County Search and Rescue-North member were flown in to a landing zone in upper Spanish Creek and ascend to, then retrieved, the subject.

I think this part of the quote better depicts where he was - on the south side of the peak below the Avenue vs. down the Kirk on the Willow Lake side.

Correct, south aspect, below the saddle between Challenger and Kit Carson and west of the Prow.

To me sounds like he tried to traverse from Challenger to Kit Carson via the Avenue and fell down. Poor guy.

And being new to Colorado, maybe he wasn't familiar with chopping steps across a frozen snow slope. One slip and your flying down into a bunch of rocks.
