Re: Couple's camping/ gear ideas
My wife and I have tried many coupling bag ideas through the years. We just zipped two bags together - heavy. Next was a Sweetie Pie - which was a zip in addition to a bag giving it about a foot more girth - ok but not really big enough for two adults. A GoLite quilt - pad combo that I assume was very similar to Ray Jardines - we threw away the pads but the quilt was ok. Just sleeping under an opened bag as a quilt - works but the person with the hood side has to fight it all night. A North Face double bag - weighed a ton! And finally we got the Western Mountaineering Alder with the summer coupler. We use the bag sometimes as a quilt and when we expect it to be cooler we add the coupler. The coupler holds the pads together, provides a nice sleeping surface, and has zippers so that you can join the bag to it. This is as good as it gets! But, you'd have to be really good friends to spend that much money for a wedding gift!
Other ideas might be really nice inflatable backcountry pillows, or one of those Thermarest blankets.
happy shopping!

Re: Couple's camping/ gear ideas
I'm reading this post and thinking about how many times I get up in the middle of the night to pee.......and thinking how THRILLED my husband would be if we were sleeping in the same bag. Also got to thinking about HIM passing gas (damn mountain house meals) and both having to suffer with that fine scent in one bag. I really don't love him that much.
Yeah, separate bags for us.

Yeah, separate bags for us.

My wife and I use two different systems. For car camping, we combine our backpacking sleeping pads (Nemo 4 inch air mattresses) through the age old method of putting them next to each other. On top of that goes a piece of queen size egg crate foam. Then we put down a double sleeping bag (I guess it is full sized) that we got for $60 from Dick's ten years ago. I sleep better this way than I do at home.
When backpacking, we use those same two pads, each with a fitted sheet. I use my top quilt, she uses hers, and everyone is happy. She can toss and turn, I can fart. Or maybe its the other way around.
For us, it really depends on circumstances. Car camping = comfort and happiness, backpacking = practicality and happiness. You can see the common threads here: the Nemo sleeping pads. Seriously, if the base is good, the rest will stand.

Re: Couple's camping/ gear ideas
Weird. I never knew how many couples like to sleep apart before reading this thread.
Anyway, as for us, we've slept hundreds of nights together in a sleeping bag. In the past ~23.5 years, we have never slept in a separate bag. It sounds like we're in the minority though.
Different strokes for different folks though.

I'm old, slow and fat. Unfortunately, those are my good qualities.

Re: Couple's camping/ gear ideas
We've been zipping together 2 mountain hardwear extralamina's (wide mummy bags) and fitting me, my wife, and our two year old all in one combined bag. An extra extra wide 30" thermarest + a 20" thermarest is just wide enough for all of us, though our toddler likes to crawl down to the foot of the bag at night and sleep by our feet
The extra-laminas aren't the absolute highest quality, but can be fully unzipped into a quilt as well. Just under 3lbs each, so in warmer temps a single bag is a nice weight for 2 people, and when it's chilly it's not horrible to bring two.
