Favorite climbs in NE? Adirondacks / White Mountains / Katahdin??

Post by kmoss2 »

Anyone else feeling a ticking shotclock on the summer climbing season?? I live in Virginia and am itching for a few more great climbs before things get snowy. Am curious what suggestions this community might have for Adirondacks, White Mountains, Katahdin, or anywhere else in Northeast. I enjoy technical trails, scrambling and routes that include Class 3 & Class 4 climbing. Little Bear, the Bells & Crestones are my favorites. Yeah fall foliage is cool, but my preference here is challenging routes that get my hands on the mountain!!

PS: actually spent a week in NH mid-June of this year & did Mt Washington via Huntington Ravine my first day -- that was fun, plus bonus fun when it started hailing at the top... :) The weather did not coordinate for a Presi traverse (made it over 5k up but turned around at Adams in what I can only describe as rock slip & slide conditions with minimal visibility..) but that's definitely on my bucket list.

If you're familiar with some great climbs in NE and had a long weekend to climb, where would you go? Thanks in advance!

Offhand as a NE refugee who spent WAY too much time in NH, and a fair bit in VT/ME:

NH:
  • Presi Range (sounds like you got the full Mount Washington experience!). Tons of ravines to play in, the full traverse of course, Huntington/Tucks, Castle Ridge, Caps Ridge, some old, long-abandoned routes if that's your jam.
  • Pemi Wilderness. Franconia Ridge is popular for a reason, the Bonds are a longer but well-worth the visit group)
Baxter State Park (ME):
  • Katahdin - Knife edge is the classic (plus descent over Hamlin and it's mini-knife edge), but the other routes all offer something too
  • Coe/Brothers(+Fort if you want) - Coe slide was fun, especially in mid-August when the slide was lined with ripe blueberries!
  • I've never been, but heard great things about the Travelers in the Northern end of the park
Not much for C3/C4 options though. Huntington is about it in NH, other than a few contrived routes in the ravines maybe.

I have no first-hand ADK knowledge for you. I lived over 20 years in NY and somehow never hiked in the ADKs/Catskills.
