Crestone Peak conditions

Post by mnsebourn »

Can anybody speak about current conditions on the standard route and where the peak might be by next weekend? I’ve seen the latest trip report with the distant visual… is the standard route as snowy as it looks like it might be?

Look in the 'Peak Conditions' section, there's a fresh condition update with photos.

Yes, I saw that and commented on it. It’s just been nearly a week and I was curious about Broken Hand Pass, if the red gully’s melted out some, if the snow can be avoided, etc. Driving all the way from Arkansas and trying to decide between heading to Westcliffe for Crestone or Leadville for a few Sawatch giants. I’d prefer the former—Crestone has turned me around twice—so I’m hoping for any info at all from someone who’s been on the standard route, as recently as possible.

Unfortunately the forecast this weekend in the Sangres is incredibly windy, 50-55 mph gusts. The Sawatch a marginally better 40-45 mph gusts. I have a friend that climbed Horn today and was being blown around on the ridge, and other friends who cancelled their Kit Carson plans due to the wind.

Thanks for the info, Chicago. It’ll probably be Monday before I’m actually hiking. So maybe it’ll calm down some by then. I hope so.

I'm coming from Arkansas on Sunday and plan on knocking out multiple Sawatch peaks next week.
