Observatory Rock and Eagle Rock?
I am looking for a map for driving to the trailheads for both of these summits or a good source with directions what I have been able to find is 20 yrs old and want to make sure the forest service roads are still oepn. We would like to use these as a warm up and acclimation hike after driving in from IL. Before a backpacking trip and tackling some higher peaks.

I don't know anything about these peaks except from a cursory google search, but it looks like people are still climbing them. Some recent-ish TRs on Lists of John for Observatory and Eagle.

The Motorized Vehicle Use Maps (MVUM) from the Forest Service will let you know if the roads are still open. If you use Gaia, they are an optional layer.emiller wrote: ↑Mon Jun 09, 2025 8:43 pm I am looking for a map for driving to the trailheads for both of these summits or a good source with directions what I have been able to find is 20 yrs old and want to make sure the forest service roads are still oepn. Re: Observatory Rock and Eagle Rock?
I did these both in December (drove to each “trailhead”) I used tracks from LOJ and then used Gaia to navigate to the start of each route.emiller wrote: ↑Mon Jun 09, 2025 8:43 pm I am looking for a map for driving to the trailheads for both of these summits or a good source with directions what I have been able to find is 20 yrs old and want to make sure the forest service roads are still oepn. Re: Observatory Rock and Eagle Rock?
love the eagle rock.
wish i had known about it in 90s - coulda been great high school camping spot to rock out at. We were always over in deckers.
they say eagle has some closures - seasonal for birds.
I was out there the next year camping in preparation for a mccurdy attempt
but was denied observatory rock due to sketchy long term hill dwellers who'd set up shop at that main camp below and were sketch and had aggressive offleash dogs. was that some kind of mobile meth lab ? may never know.
but but i also actually even then evaded them and did make fledging attempt to the rock - but in circling around to its north side didn't see a way and then just did bail.

I did Eagle years ago, but was up on nearby Burntop, Unnamed 9894, and Unnamed 9889 in mid-April. Dry, open roads all the way to the "trailheads." If you don't get directions from anyone else, holler and I can get you the info.

Where are these two 9ers you mentioned? I plan to do the Puma Group soon and would like to add these on along with Eagle & Observatory.

You can easily combine Observatory and 9889.

Re: Observatory Rock and Eagle Rock?
For Observatory we parked about where the '20' and '834' are on this map. We came in from the south.
The roads weren't bad. A little narrow but that was about it. A good map is helpful to navigate but if you're paying attention you should be ok.
