Wrapping ski pole grips

Post by cjw »

My Whippet ski pole handles are disintegrating. They are old and the rubber is breaking down, my hands and gloves are black and sticky. Before I replace them, has anyone successfully wrapped ski pole grips with some sort of tape or wrap?

In a pinch I've used duct tape on a couple of poles, which fixed them so to speak but they were a little slippery more than I would like especially when sweaty... But what you could try is either getting corking from a fishing rod place (probably a rod building supply company since corking is used for grips ) or even golf grips and modify them which means probably cutting them a little to get them to fit.

Bar tape for bicycles (the kind used on road bike bars) also comes to mind as a possible solution, but I haven't tried it.

I went with some Tennis handle wrap. Probably won't get to test it until next year. Thanks for the ideas!

I used bike handlebar tape and wrapped the end with electrical tape and it’s stayed on nicely for two seasons now.

This is what I did when some marmots got to my trekking poles. It honestly wasn't that great, and I only used them a few months until I could get a new set when they went on sale. I think this was partially because I don't have any experience wrapping bike bars, so I don't think I did a particularly good job with the wrap. And also, the marmots had such a feast on the original grips, that I had to scrape all the remaining bits off with a knife and start with the bare poles. Since the poles are so thin, I had to double wrap, just to get to a "gripable" thickness, which compounded the sub-par wrapping job.

I hope the tennis tape works better for you!
