Best to watch for cancellations on the gov site and try to snag one.

If possible, try to get to the Visitor Center just south of Lone Pine the evening before your climb. My wife and I snagged a last minute permit to day hike Whitney in October 2018 after obsessively checking for permit openings for months prior.
