Man rescued after being pinned by 700-pound boulder

Post by painless4u2 »

This could have ended a lot worse. Being suddenly pinned by a 700 lb boulder, face down in icy, rising water is not a good situation. Thanks to the rescue teams at Seward Fire Dept., it had a good outcome. This sort of thing is what gives me pause about solo hikes and climbs.

The couple were experienced backcountry Alaskans, so knew how to find help. And fortunately help was close.

Coincidentally I was camping on the Seward seashore the night before and after the incident, but only recently read about it. The weather was late spring, with 30s and night and 50s during the day and no ground snow at sea level. All the camp sites were taken Memorial weekend. But it was not crazy crowded like it will be next month when the fish start running.
