Sad to report a fatal accident along Falcon Ridge of Wichita outside of Frisco. Not many details have been released. This is one of my favorite scrambles anywhere in the state. I've taken many friends up it. It's exposed in a few spots but has generally solid rock along the ridge. I doubt it exceeds 4th class. I wonder if he got off route or encountered poor conditions. It'll be a complex, difficult recovery for SAR. There is no place for a helicopter to land, it's steep and the terrain is thick with deadfall and foliage. Condolences to the climber's family and friends.

I've been following the recovery efforts all day. They were not able to bring a chopper in and the recovery was done on foot. About a six hour mission. This was a knowledgeable person who has a lot of experience and time on that route. RIP.

Re: Fatal Fall on Wichita (in Frisco)
Very sad. I've lived in Summit for 5 years and use Royal as my pre-season "get back into shape"; I always look across at Wichita with fascination and curiosity. However, I've not been able to find enough beta on route(s) up to comfortably give it a try yet. From what I've read this climber was well-seasoned and very experienced. As he was solo I doubt we'll learn much if any more detail about how this accident happened. It makes me so sad; though I didn't know him, every time I am looking at that ridge he will undoubtedly be in my thoughts. May he rest in peace, and condolences to his loved ones.
