I've always used a headlamp with primary (one-time) batteries, and then had a rechargeable insert that I could use for non-cold weather use.
Some of the lamps I'm looking at now are just rechargeable, with no option for using lithium primary cells.
How do the rechargeable lamps/batteries hold up in the cold? Primary use for me are things like Rainier and Alps in the summer, so 20F, not sub zero.

They'll be fine. Keep them in your pocket when not in use. When in use, running the light will cause many of them to heat up, effectively protecting the battery from getting too cold. But "too cold" is really below 0F
What you don't wanna do below freezing is RECHARGE a lithium battery. That will lead to potential damage to the battery.

Re: rechargeable headlamps in the cold
I had a buddy who sewed a neoprene pocket to cook around his GoPro and hold a hand warmer in it. Worked pretty well. Ha.
But of course cameras draw a lot more power than a headlamp.
I just bought a BD Storm, and then also the rechargeable battery. Figure I'll use the recharge when I can, and lithium primary when I know it'll be cold or I might need a backup charge.
I just can't commit to an integrated battery on a headlamp.

There's convenience in integrated batteries... but I more prefer 18650 powered head lamps. You can find more expensive ones from Fenix and cheaper ones from Sofirn. Swapping out the battery is pretty convenient and you can find battery themselves that have a charging port.
