I did specify “encouraging for those who want to attempt Snowmass in May or June”. I can see how it’s discouraging for other reasons but I wasn’t referring to those with my comment since they seem a bit unrelated to the thread.d_baker wrote: ↑Fri Apr 18, 2025 4:04 pmEncouraging in a very negative way.JROSKA wrote: ↑Thu Apr 17, 2025 11:02 pm Encouraging news for anyone considering a May or June attempt at Snowmass …

Seeing 2025 snow pack is around 90%, thinking May might be primetime, but also unsure about stream crossings - would love perspective from others with Snowmass experience - thanks!
Can't have everything, if you want a nice (dry) hike in for the approach, but still want snow above the lake to avoid scree/talus/rock, you're climbing in warming weather which means snowmelt and higher water at the creek crossing. So choose your poison.
I've been up there in June, July and September and while the snow climb in late Spring / early summer was really nice (and did avoid the scree), the water at the log jam crossing was quite high and when people fell in it ruined their day unless they had stripped down before hand, otherwise you're climbing in wet boots and socks (had you not brought backups). However, in September, while water was low and very little snow around, the scree was very manageable and nothing like Bross or other "screefests" most folks complain about.

Indy pass not opening early, apparently. And taking Indy barely cuts off drive time from Denver
