13er or beautiful hike in Carbondale area

Post by debzerm »

Hello!
We are staying in Carbondale and looking for a beautiful hike - the first week of June.
Last year we did Independence Pass and loved that more than a peak (previously Quandry and Democrat) - as it was less strenuous and more beautiful.
Our group is varied ranging from 15yo-50+, some in state some out.
We have climbed before and are aware of elevation acclimation, etc.
Also realize snow could easily be an issue first week of June.

In short - we are looking for recommendations - doesn't have to be a peak - just a beautiful hike, similar to Independence Pass. Half Day or so, 5 ish miles.....

Thanks in Advance !

If you've not been there before, the Maroon Lake trailhead would be a good starting point. It's a gently hike up the valley from there to Crater Lake and beyond (my wife and I did an all day hike up the valley no problem when she was 7-1/2 months pregnant, but admittedly she's a pretty tough girl). Spectacular views of the most photographed mountains in the state. Reservations are required for parking and there is a fee. You could also take the shuttle from Aspen, check out aspenchamber.org. Have fun!

If it were me and I was in Carbondale, I'd probably go to Thomas lakes right there under Mt Sopris. https://www.hikingwalking.com/index.php ... omas_lakes

^ second this. Gorgeous spot. June 1 last year it was super verdant, with a healthy amount of snow on trail before the lakes and a bit muddy coming down. Assume that will be less of a factor this season.
