Mt. Democrat south slope

Post by sowades »

This trail is listed as a snow route. Has anyone done it in mid August? Is there a visible trail? Is the footway very loose and prone to rock fall? Would anyone advise taking it to make a loop hike for Mt. Democrat only (up the south slope and down the traditional trail)?

Thanks for your feedback

I guess you could but why on earth would you? This is a snow climb that takes snow gullies through cliff bands. In summer it's all talus, definitely no trail. Some snow routes are occasionally okay in summer, but really only if there is no other option or if there is good rock that otherwise hides beneath the snow.

i wouldn't let this dream die just yet.

I was looking hard at this when i went back to clean up democrat - after having denied it like three times for a cleaner Cameron>Lincoln>Bross loop.

and i stand by that decision too.

But i had to abandon the plan when i ended up bringing newbie companion who could not hang.

but it seems to me - you don't have to hit the scree directly off democrat - work your way over to the saddle between demo and buck. there's a possible move or two there?
Keep looking up - Jack Horkheimer

Snow routes after the snow melts = major suck. I can't think of any exceptions to this rule.
