Is ski traffic bad yet (I-70 tomorrow/Sat)?

Post by rdp32 »

I'm thinking of heading out on I-70 tomorrow to go hiking, but I typically avoid going that way on nice Saturdays in the winter because of the horrendous traffic. II realize that ski season isn't in full swing yet... is the traffic expected to be bad tomorrow?

Ummm, not sure what your definition is but traffic is bad on I-70 on the weekend year-round, tomorrow will be no different...

In my experience, the traffic gets way worse on nice weekend days during ski season, compared to what it's been recently. So my question was basically if that ski traffic has picked up yet

Morning is unlikely to be bad as everyone is not leaving at the same time (yet). Afternoon could be be backed up as everyone generally heads back at the same time.

As a year-round hiker and snowboarder I have this down!
First, ski season is not in full swing. Hiking season for most folks is over and fall foliage is gone. So, you should be fine early tomorrow morning heading west. Minor delays in the usual places, but barring a crash, you should be fine. Weekend traffic on a Saturday can get ugly at Floyd Hill heading west around 10am -1pm for some reason. Coming back should be ok with minimal delays. I may be doing exactly the same tomorrow!

Once ski season fires up - after Thanksgiving - Saturday mornings will suck and get progressively worse until spring break is over. I time my winter hiking to early Sunday morning and returning around noon to avoid eastbound delays. Enjoy!
- I didn't say it was your fault. I said I was blaming you.

November and April-May are the best months to travel up I70

The challenge with this question is that bad is a relative term. November is generally not as bad as other months, so relatively speaking it’s better but I70 is always a scene man.

I was on Loveland Pass this morning for Sniktau/Cupid/Grizzly D and had no issues whatsoever with parking or travel. I was at the Pass fairly early (7:30AM), but even by when I was off the peaks at noon, there were lots of people but no actual traffic.

Pretty solid so far. \:D/

Thanks all. We actually ended up doing a local bike ride instead, but I was interested in understanding the current traffic patterns in any case

no traffic going up or coming down on saturday. november is not "leave at 5am and get off the mountain by 1:30" season, and hasn't been since about 2015.
