Oof, so no satellite signaling device OR detailed itinerary? Or perhaps they've already checked his planned route and not found anything?

Their planned route has been searched extensively. They were at a point where they were bringing in random employees from RMNP - from biologist to dispatch - to help assist with the search and his expected route was part of that.

That is a huge search area. The latest update from the NPS is that he sent a text around noon on the 27th indicating he was nearly at the summit of Alice. Assuming he started from East Inlet like it says and was moving CCW, that leaves a lot of ground he still had to cover.

Sounds like he did have an itinerary, experience, and working phone with which he updated his wife. I definitely can relate to those choices.
Sorry to hear about the continuing search thus far and appreciate all the effort that has gone into the search.

Heads up, there is a closure from Alice to McHenrys beginning this evening to give SAR crews ample room and limit distractions for dog teams. See map below.
