S&R Mt of the Holy Cross 8/25

Post by out_there »

Was out there today 8/25 & there seemed to be quite the operation going on. Ran the out & back to the camping area in east cross creek & saw the S&R heli making several trips around the peak. The cloud cover in the area today is thick, clouds were covering the peak and in some places went all the way to the valley floor in cross creek basin. Had an awful feeling when I got back there as today of all days it would be very easy to miss the right turn coming off the peak. 2 other cars in the lot, didn’t see a soul all day though. Coming back down the road there were several folks with Vail Mountain Rescue who looked to be preparing to head into the field with search dogs.
Anyone have any info? Hope they were able to find who they were looking for.

Team was looking for more clues in Michelle Vanek's dissapearance. Her boot was found in the bowl of tears last year. Not sure why the heli was flying, might have just been a coincidence.

Huh? The Bowl of Tears?" I don't think so.

Folks may have already seen this, but if not this is the first detailed description I've seen about exactly where her boot was found - it really was below Angelica Couloir. That obviously means her path was very different than anyone imagined (or at least than I ever would have guessed), but maybe helps to explain why the searchers weren't able to find her on the west side despite the incredible search efforts that first week and in the months and years after.

Thanks for posting this Erik2. I had no idea about these more-recent developments. Clearly, the early theories about where she likely went were way off. My apologies for questioning you, Dignus, you knew what you were talking about.
