Peter Jones didn’t give me much. I heard he originally wanted THE record that AH has but realized it was out of reach and settled for self-supported. Unlike today’s FKTs, seems his FKT was established entirely on trust.

I can tell you one thing I know from talking briefly to Dan Hobbs - he researched Peter’s effort extensively. He can provide more insight than me.

I’m pretty sure Culebra was open back in 1995. You just had to call the ranch and they charged like $25-$40 to climb. It was in 1999 right before i was setting off for my first 14er record attempt that i discovered the ranch had been sold and was closed off to hiking.

So the day before i left i looked up the property owner with a property record search and found the name of a law firm that represented the owner and i contacted them. They contacted the owner and i was given permission to climb.

The following year multiple parties were contacting them for permission and there was an incident where someone got lost on their property so for a few years it was basically locked down while the CMC struggled to get permission for people to climb.

So back in 1995 i doubt it was as much of a problem.

By the way, after meeting with the owner who closed Decalibron and i assume it’s a similar issue for Lindsey, i can tell you that its definitely not a power trip for them. In fact the owner of Decalibron is really a very nice guy who i liked very much. He told us he wants hikers to enjoy the mountains and he wanted it to be open.

However, There was a court decision that basically made them liable for those of us who are idiots who would go injure ourselves on their property and then sue them for millions (good ole USA!)

He couldn’t get enough insurance to cover himself and basically needed to shut things down while getting his ducks in a row to make sure he was safe from such lawsuits.

So anyway anyone reading this please always be respectful to these landowners and the land and hopefully we can keep these peaks open!

I climbed Culebra in August 1994 as my finisher. I called the ranch from San Luis with the number in the Borneman and Lampert book and was told that the gate was open, come on in.Met the caretaker, paid $20 and drove up the road to the timberline camping area for the night. Super easy back then. Of course the situation has always been fluid from year to year.

I hope his Garmin is functioning. No update since last night and it seems like a late start for another big day.

He's moving fast again. Looks like the Satellite feed was interrupted for an hour.

He's doing great! Here are stats thru his start this morning. Look back at my post early yesterday for the earlier peaks.

Hope he got a good night's sleep for a big day today.

Curious, why would he not have taken the SE Gully on Humboldt, as seen on previous FKT routes, instead of having to double back?

I’m guessing he didn’t know about it, neither did I! Oh well something else to go scout out, sigh.

I did tell him about the great class 3/4/5 (choose your own adventure) route directly from Challenger to Kit Carson avoiding the Avenue and he took that and said he loved it. It’s really a great way to go from challenger to Kit Carson if you are comfortable with some exposure.

Does anyone have any stats on the loop he did today? Looks like quite an impressive feat, and I'm curious what the mileage and gain are for it. I plugged it into Gaia but with the off-trail traverses he did I don't trust its accuracy too much.
