It's good that you like early starts, not everyone does but they are a good way to avoid lightning, storms, crowds, etc. If you progress into longer, harder routes, then you get to start even earlier. I remember my first midnight start, with a stomach that was not sold on that particular deal. 8:00 p.m. starts can get odd, watching the sunset then seeing all of the night crawl by.

Which routes would you start at 8PM for? I know it's common to start at 2-3AM on Longs and Pikes due to the length.Broken Knee wrote:It's good that you like early starts, not everyone does but they are a good way to avoid lightning, storms, crowds, etc. If you progress into longer, harder routes, then you get to start even earlier. Crestones from the 2WD parking area. About, what, 6mi on 4WD road to upper TH, 3mi on "trail" that used to be road, hike up to SC lakes, up Broken Hand, etc. There were some interesting Crestone hikes this weekend: pair that spent 28 hours including rapping then bivouacing trying to get down, a first time 14er for a guy who descended Crestone's NW col ran out of food and water and no headlamp who bivied with a space blanket (seeing him walking out the morn' with that crumpled in his hand, you knew things didn't go as planned), and a couple guys who had a loooong day (off route again?) who were looking for a ride back to the 2WD lot at 9pm.mrvwbug wrote:Which routes would you start at 8PM for?
