Wolfe Hut destroyed

The Wolfe Hut at Lake Como has been torn down. Being a SLV local I came here a lot, this hut was a great place to hang out or take a break, especially in the winter.
I was hoping that someone on board could enlighten me as to why this happened, and to let everyone know that this hut is no more.

Don't know, but my guess it met the same fate as the Conundrum Hot Springs cabin; the forest service doesn't like these structures and tends to tear them down.

I've been led to believe that the cabin was on private property. FS has no say on it if that is the case...

Weird. It was "upgraded" a few years back. Curious what happened there.

Do you think they considered it a bear magnet? People leave freeze dried food packs in there for (I assume) hikers who came unprepared, and I remember reading a trip report of someone who slept in there and heard a bear sniffing around the cabin the whole night.

That’d make sense if so, but sad to see it go.. that place was a godsend during a cold November trip up to Lake Como

My kids are going to be crushed! We've affectionately referred to this as the "Lake Como Hotel". I shared this picture (EDIT: photo credit Mike Via (EagleEye)) with my kids, telling them that someday when they got older, perhaps I'd take them glamping at the Lake Como Hotel. My daughter now asks me before every single winter climb I do if I'm sleeping in that "scary looking old shack in the woods" again this time?!?!

Someone had definitely done a TON of work on this place. Last October when I was there, the LCH was downright luxurious.

Based on LURE's responses elsewhere, it is most likely some sort of hunting app. There are a handful of ($$$) hunting apps that show property lines and who owns the property. Most of the information is already public (most counties have excellent GIS mapping on their websites), but that involves a little digging.

Based on LURE's responses elsewhere, it is most likely some sort of hunting app. There are a handful of ($$$) hunting apps that show property lines and who owns the property. Most of the information is already public (most counties have excellent GIS mapping on their websites), but that involves a little digging.

You can do this on Caltopo with the land management layer turned on. As LURE said the private property is not near the lake. There actually appears to be a mining claim of some sort on the standard route of Little Bear.
