#12 Centennial - Mt Silverheels

A nice 630am start time on the Hoosier Pass. I always thought I would do Silverhels in the winter, perhaps I still will, but today was kind of spontaneous.

It looks like a beautiful day but it is cold and windy. And since I didn't plan on doing a hike last night when I went to bed I was not fully prepared for high winds.

I dropped off the Hoosier Pass ridge too early and went down the wrong gully. Not that big a deal and might even be faster but was more elevation to gain back to the power line up in the left corner.

I met two other hikers this morning who were also summiting Silverheels. I saw this deer get scared and ran from them as they came up over the correct trail above me.

Back to the proper saddle. This hill was a slog and takes about 45 minutes to go up slowly but steadily.

Once again on the way up I found myself too far to the right hand side. Again it wasn't a big deal and if you do lose the trail its easy to just pick a line and move up. Was nice to step on the crunchy snow as well.

Going back down. The high winds and coldness of the winds chased me off the summit quickly.

On the correct trail. Earlier I came up the gully where the lower power line is placed.

The Continential Divide in snow looks like a black and white cookie.

Looking back at Silverheels on the way out. Finally the winds aren't as crazy and I can enjoy the hike back down to car and take some breaks along the way.

Driving the sports car was main reason I wanted to get out and drive the mountain roads. But with all my upcoming road trips involving dirt roads I may have to trade it in for a nice suv i can car camp in. Anyone know a good suv that is comfortable to fold down the seats and make a flat bed in let me know. If you follow my 14ers journey you know I used a 2000 Chevy Blazer that worked well but this time I think a more powerful and comfortable suv.

Nice to meet you out there yesterday. We made it over to Hoosier Ridge and Red Peak, nice quiet day! Little windy though.
