Climbing my Backyard Summits- Bushnell Peak and the Twin Sisters

These three peaks, especially the Twin Sisters are visible from my house and all are less than 10 miles away as the bird flies. I lived in Howard, CO for 10 mths now and finally visited these peaks. I have been to both basins between the peaks but this is the first time I actually reached the summits.

I started at Kerr Gulch TH in Howard, about 20 miles south of Salida. It was a nice early summer day on a Sunday and I saw only one other group well below the summits, probably camping in the Stout Lakes Basin for fishing. By this route, you are greeted with two alpine basins with several ponds in each, Two 13ers and a worthwhile unranked 12er, rough and tumble off trail hiking, and great northern Sangre views. These peaks and their alpine lakes are worth a visit and a good place for a solitude not too far from Salida.
I have a thorough trip report with MANY pictures at on my blog at
