 My new favorite scramble route
Those of you who have been past Gothic on Schofield Pass, or ridden a bike on 401, will probably already be familiar with Avery and its "Red Diamond" face.

I've been meaning to climb it for years, but it took until last weekend to finally do it. The face exceeded my expectations- it's simply one of the best friction climbing scrambles you're likely to find anywhere. The face is comprised of 2 distinct types of rock- red sandstone and a whitish conglomerate slightly reminiscent of the Crestones.

Despite being in the heart of the Elks, the rock is quite good- the face is such a uniform slab so the loose stuff gets washed away off many areas of the face, and those are the areas you climb right up. We used rock shoes on the face, as most people do (or sticky rubber approach shoes). Here is the full link: LINK

If you're into scramble routes, you owe it to yourself to come down to Crested Butte and check this one out. Here's a few photos.

Yeah, that rock does look a little like Crestone conglomerate! About how many feet do you think the scramble is?

And I'll say about 1500'- 1800' of scrambling in the gully and on the face. Tough to say since there are so many route choices as to when you get on the face.

From a friend who lived in CB for a few years. He highly reccomended this as well. Thanks for the beta as it was unclear what the optimal ”route” was.

One of my favorite peaks down in your area. If I remember correctly though it started to rain on our way down and that was actually pretty scary. Great rock though for the Elks.
