Info: Snow for most of the way (possibly some bare spots on the road portion). I used snowshoes, friend used microspikes: both worked.

Info: Snow most of the way up the road, across the valley, and halfway up the slopes. Snow cover was quite thin in places, including along the trail. Snowpack off trail is neither compacted or stable; where not boot-packed you will posthole if the temperatures are very warm out. Lots of snow "whumphing" and collapses with off-trail travel; watch out for terrain traps.

If you left behind a small backpack with MSR youth-sized snowshoes attached behind a rock around 12,500', we brought it back to the Naylor Lake trailhead for you on 3/1. (And in case anyone wonders, yes, we confirmed it was abandoned before hauling it out... there was no one else on the peak ahead of us when we climbed.)

Info: I wore trail runners and my feet were wet the entire time. The snow was so slippery, there was a considerable amount of post-holing in other people’s footsteps. The wind this day was insane I nearly didn’t summit but pushed up since it only took about 10min at the final push up. Spent two minutes up there and followed people down because I got so far off trail going up. Should’ve waited till summer, this day wasn’t super fun but nonetheless— checked off!

Info: Beautiful bluebird day. Not a lot ended up falling with the last storm and it’s already melting quick. The road was mostly dry to the winter gate when I headed down with a few stretches of packed snow. The road past the gate is well trenched down from today’s traffic, and only 6” of powder or so if you wander off. The boardwalk section through the willows is well packed and the snow is melted off the wood. The rest of the slopes until you gain the ridge are shallow and packed. I wouldn’t carry snowshoes right now. The snow was easy to avoid from the ridge to the summit with some rock hopping. Didn’t bother to throw on spikes until about 13,000 feet but they were nice to have for the decent. A lot of the trail is actually runnable right now. I actually wish I had left the boots at home and wore trail runners and shorts instead, it was so nice out! On the way down there were two moose hanging out by the trail in the willows but didn’t seem bothered. 10:30 am start, 4 hours 10 minutes car to car made for a quick day.

Info: ~4" of powdery snow fell overnight above the powerplant to the summit. The road walk from the winter closure now has a good boot track from all the traffic today, depth is generally 4-6", so not much base. Boardwalks through the willows were already melting out from the sun by mid-afternoon. From the start of the climb to the summit is snow covered, but some areas were clearly bare before the overnight snow, just not a lot of coverage in many areas. From 12,500' to around 13,500' the coverage is deeper, generally shin deep - snowshoes might be the best call here (for now) but you'll still find a fair number of rocks. Above 13,500' there's just enough snow to create a "fun" game of trapdoor roulette, not enough to bury things and make the going nicer with snowshoes. Tedious but doable, but around a half dozen people turned around in this stretch due to the conditions. I'm just more stubborn than some. More snow would make this a wonderful snowshoe ascent, right now it's just in that annoying in-between state we usually see in November. IE, par for the 25/26 winter so far. Snowshoes would be viable in stretches, but I was the only one even carrying them, and I opted not to use them. Spikes did the job, but weren't a perfect answer either.

Beautiful day - a classic clear, deep blue skies day with mild winds and temps. Seeing all the peaks around covered in a fresh blanket was nice - finally looked a bit like winter today, let's get some more of that snow going!

Info: The road from the winter closure is walkable; snow packed with sections of bare pavement. Ascended the mountain in hiking boots with no traction until the approach to the summit rock pile at ~ 14k. Put on spikes there and kept them on for the descent. No need for any other snow gear.

Info: As others said, super easy conditions. 90% packed snow, 9% melted out, 1% ice. Took a photo of the Sawtooth route: looks like a lot of snow on the descent off Bierstadt but the ledges look dry.

Info: The conditions are good. Most of the trail is a few inches of packed snow. There are only a couple short spots where the snow would even be deep enough to punch through, but I never did. I used Microspikes on the descent.

Info: Chill conditions, used microspikes start to finish. There are a number of icy spots through the trail so better to have them on for confident foot placement.

Info: No flotation necessary. Road is packed, trail is packed. Put on spikes at the saddle before final pitch to summit and left them on until back down on the flats. See pics for visuals. If you're willow-whacking there are some knee to waist deep pockets of snow. Didn't see any moose, unfortunately, heard some pika, and had a raven friend playing on the wind thermals. More snow on this route than we had 2 weeks ago on Princeton. Crazy dry winter. :( The peak is not skiable, but it looks like there were some old ski tracks on the road above the winter closure.

Info: the trail is packed down the whole way- don’t bother with snowshoes! trail runners and microspikes were totally fine.

the pass is closed 2 miles from the trailhead but the road walking is not bad at all. lots of parking spots right near the road closure!

Info: Crazy dry! Half the trail is practically summer conditions! Absolutely no need whatsoever for snowshoes! Road not skiable since it's so dry - even the adjacent ditch would be hard to connect snow to the pass. Did ok without traction going up, though I did have a couple mild slips. Going down wore spikes the entire way in order to have better speed with confidence. Speaking of which, this Jan grid slot restored my confidence after the recent Como debacle since I kept a killer pace throughout the day! Wind was mild until just below the summit then suddenly wicked until I reached the actual summit at which point it almost totally stopped until the descent. Weird. Got almost whiteout conditions for a bit - visibility briefly dropped below 20ft on the summit. On the way up helped the guy with the Duck Dynasty beard and his younger partner escape the willows after they got off track while evading moose. Later gave them a heads up on conditions as they neared the summit while I was coming down. Great warm-up hike for the New Year!

Info: As everywhere else - bare snow conditions. Road to summer TH 50% bare/packed snow. Packed down snow through the willows, nice snow bridge over creek, then about 50% packed snow/bare trail, with few spots of ice. Did not need to use spikes, 15-20mph wind at the top - all in all a very nice day for "winter." Sawtooth looks very dry from the distance.

Info: Was an awesome day on Bierstadt. Hardly any wind and was pretty warm. Road is closed at the winter trailhead. Like the other post mentioned there are quite a few moose. We saw 6-7. They were mostly in the willows after the frozen creek crossing.

Snowshoes were not needed. I brought microspikes and never felt the need to put them on. Only postholed a couple of times and wasn’t really an issue.

Info: Moose alert! Conditions were fantastic today. Road was pretty much clear of snow, we wore mountaineering boots and I brought snowshoes but did not need them. We saw people in hikers/trailrunners. Did not make the summit. Turned around due to 6 moose close to/on the trail through the willows. Be very cautious going through the meadow the moose are definitely out more now that there’s reduced human activity. Moose scat and tracks on the trail. Other than that low wind and a good booter put in by hikers.
