Did the Culebra thing yesterday 7/17/15. ONLY 18 people signed in/out and if I remember correctly the limit was 25 via there website. Its a risk but you could always try showing up at the gate at 5:45am with your signed waiver and money ready and possibly a copy of a photo ID. Maybe even offer them a doughnut or something. The worst that can happen is they tell you No, but there are plenty of ways to spend the day in the San Luis valley.

I know you are joking but I really hope that mountain climbing doesn't go the way of professional spectator sports, road races, etc (Stub Hub, scalping of permits, having to register at midnight the night registration opens for the Boston marathon, etc.) Hopefully the fact that most 14ers climbers don't attempt Culebra until they have already climbed most of the others will keep it from being a competition to get permits. Even more important, hopefully the fact that the ranch is selling out this year won't cause them to double or triple the price in the future. I would hate to see a $1000 permit being part and parcel to successfully completing the 14ers someday.

What is the cost to hike Culebra these days anyway?

$150. For that you can summit Culebra or Culebra and Red.
