Frequently Asked Questions about Wetterhorn Peak

Is Wetterhorn Peak a safe mountain for a first Class 3 scramble?

Yes, Wetterhorn Peak is widely considered to be one of the best and most enjoyable introductory Class 3 14ers in Colorado. Unlike the fragile, treacherous, and rotten rock found in the Elk Mountains, the volcanic rock on Wetterhorn's upper structure is exceptionally solid, blocky, and reliable. The route features a perfect progression from a beautiful, mellow alpine hike into a fun, short, and highly secure scramble, making it the ideal stepping stone for hikers who want to test their comfort with Class 3 terrain.

How difficult and exposed is the final summit pitch?

The final 150 vertical feet is a steep, highly exposed scramble that looks intimidating but offers ladder-like handholds and footholds. In terms of technical movement, the final pitch sits on the easy, beginner-friendly side of Class 3 because the volcanic rock is incredibly solid and the route features massive, secure blocks that resemble an open-air staircase. If you are a hiker who is not yet comfortable with massive heights or drop-offs, this exposure may feel uncomfortable and intense, meaning you must stay focused and maintain three solid points of contact on the rock at all times. Wear a helmet.

Can I combine Wetterhorn Peak and Uncompahgre Peak in a single day hike?

Yes, but doing so requires a large endurance effort that spans over 15 miles and involves more than 5,500 feet of total vertical elevation gain. To pull off this classic San Juan double-header, you must summit Wetterhorn Peak first via the standard Matterhorn Creek route, descend back down to 12,000', and then cross over the expansive, tundra-covered ridges to ascend Uncompahgre's standard South Ridge route. Because you will be spending several contiguous hours completely exposed above the treeline, you must start your hike well before dawn to ensure you don't get trapped by the region's notoriously violent afternoon alpine thunderstorms.

Are there designated wilderness camping rules I need to follow in the Matterhorn Creek basin?

Yes, because the trailhead and approach routes reside within the Uncompahgre Wilderness area, you must strictly adhere to US Forest Service Leave No Trace regulations. You are permitted to use the highly visible, pre-existing dispersed camping sites scattered near the upper trailhead and along Matterhorn Creek, but your tent must be pitched at least 100 feet away from any active water sources or hiking trails. Campfires are restricted during summer months, and you must pack out all human waste using dedicated WAG bags to preserve the delicate, highly frequented alpine ecosystem.
