Agreed. In fact, I would propose that taking a trip through Red Gully is the real secret the posters in the hoping-to-slow-aging thread are looking for, as I am fairly certain that time slows down in RG to such an extent that it actually goes backward.

The last time I tried doing something similar on a YouTube comment section, I was met with hostility and mockery. It's good to see that (most) of the people in this thread have been cordial enough. If you're ever interested in further study about causal thinking (the 'why' of things), maybe check out parts of David Hume's "Enquiry Concerning Human Understanding", Immanuel Kant's "Critique of Pure Reason", and Friedrich Nietzsche's "Twilight of the Idols." Also, feel free to message me about any other related issues, insights, etc. Later. -Lucas (C.T.)

ok i cannot resist this too.

because i have been thinking about this lately in various contexts. but to me mtn climbing would always be at the core of this idea because it seems to 'call you back'

Mimetic Landscapes of the Mind!

That thing you are looking at some kind of projection of yourself. That 'next mountain' you're chasing after is Gatsby's green light people. You're trapped in the mimetic landscape of your mind!! Just like the rest of us.

Gatsby believed in the green light, the orgastic future that year by year recedes before us. It eluded us then, but that’s no matter—tomorrow we will run faster, stretch out our arms farther. . . . And one fine morning——So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past.

Keep looking up - Jack Horkheimer

Why did life become more complex? Well, 1 possible explanation pertains to the 2nd law of thermodynamics that the universe tends towards maximizing entropy. Maybe the universe "culminated" in humans because that's the universe's way of maximizing entropy since humans are REALLY REALLY good at increasing entropy. From all the infrastructure we build to heating/cooling our homes, all that has a cost.

Why did the big bang happen? again, maybe cause of entropy! Fraction upon fractions of seconds following the big bang is when entropy throughout the universe was its lowest ie everything was the most uniform. The temperature was within 99.9% the same throughout. Now all our entropy is stored in black holes.

Obviously i didn't actually get to the heart of your question cause why the f**k is entropy even a thing is what you are asking (and the answers for sure lie deep within Quantum theory ie why did matter win over anit-matter?!) but hey I kinda tried to provide an answer :-D

side discussion to all thus, I used to think that with the sheer vastness of the universe that NO WAY we are the only complex living creature. What's really insane to think, is what if we actually are the pinnacle! How sad it is what we are doing to this lovely "pale blue dot" of ours as captured below by Voyager 1:

Mountains of the Mind by British author Robert McFarlane is an excellent look into the "why" of mountaineering and the history surrounding human fascination with such uninhabitable places as mountains. Fascinating. Highly recommend giving it a read!

In the 1989 film, Star Trek V, Captain Kirk free solos El Capitan, purely for recreation. In 2017 Alex Honnold did it in real life, which most of the 8 billion people on Earth would consider to be incontrovertibly insane.

Also, here is a really great song about mountain climbing that actually holds more truth than comedy:
