Eastern Sierra ideas

Postby nyker » Fri Apr 27, 2012 7:43 pm

Hi all, I will be in the eastern sierra early-mid May and am looking for some suggestions on some peaks to do, that have accessible trailheads and that can be done in a day trip. I'll have a colleague with me who won't be able to camp, so we're limiting climbs to what we can do in a day (this could include Whitney if the conditions are right).

Has anyone climbed Mt Gould, Kearsarge Peak or University Peaks? I hear these all can be done as a dayhike, does anyone know the roundtrip distance and elev. gain for each and if a norma 2wd rental car can easily get to the trailheads?

There is still gonna be a lot of snow up there I am guessing, they had an average winter which=a big winter in CO. I would shoot for the Tioga Pass area, Virginia Lakes, or the Sawtooths out of Bridgeport. Those roads seem to provide the best early season access in the northern part of the eastern Sierra. Dunderberg Peak is a classic, but perhaps crampons and axes, a nice warm up at least. Easily done in a day.
