Snow camping practice 12/11-12/12

Post by sgladbach »

It's time to get back in the snow camping mode. I'd like to gert together a group who always wanted to give it a shot, but didn't want to set out alone. Some "How to" session with everyone throwing in their best tips. We'll need some experienced snow campers who are interestd to come along and help give tips.

I was thinking Uncompahgre. Meet Saturday morning about 8:30AM (Montrose motels?), take a semi-leisurely 4 mile/ 2200' (or more, depending on snow closure) snowshoe/ski trip from the 2WD to the 4WD THs. Arrive at camp by noon and set up tents (snowcaves?; but not MY thing.) Maybe a campfire (again, not my thing) or a beacon search. Maybe get a few people to set some track for Sunday.

Sunday at 6AM, set out for the summit. Goal would be to cover 3.25 miles and 3000' by 11AM and get back to camp by 2PM. Hit the cars by 4PM. it's a 4-5 hour drive home for most. Who's interested? post to the thread, but if you are serious, send me a PM.

Due to the "invitation to first timers", poor weather forecasts would call off the trip as late as Wed. 12/8.

Just my game!
I have marked my calendar for this one...

Dang. I would like to go (with my boy), but after December 8 I'll be sweating in the Indonesian jungles.

Will you be doing more trips later in the year?
I'm old, slow and fat. Unfortunately, those are my good qualities.

I don't mind driving, but I have an old 4Runner so my feelings won't be hurt if someone else has a nicer/more comfortable ride. I do live in Castle Rock, but if we plan to head out Hwy 50, maybe CR would be a good place to meet. We will stay in touch as plans develop.

I can't commit 100%, as that is the weekend before finals for me, but if I'm not too swamped with schoolwork I'd be interested. I have a 2-man winter tent that I can bring. What is the rating (degrees) for sleeping bags generally required for winter camping in CO?
Most things worth doing are difficult, dangerous, expensive, or all three.

Same issue as shredthegnar10's. If I can't make that weekend, then I'll be at it one of the following weekends, so route information would be greatly appreciated! I always enjoy reading Steve's winter reports.
