Mt. Richtofen approach?

Post by BaggerVance »

I was wanting to climb Mt Richtofen from the Lake Agnes area. Is there a trail from Agnes or is it a lil more bushwhacking? I've done Unnamed(No Name?) peak thats west of Lake Agnes but always wanted to do Richtofen.

Thanks.....

No trail. Go around the west side of Lake Agnes to the south side of the lake, then pick a route up to the saddle between Richthofen and "Mahler". Follow the ridge line up from the saddle.

Rock can get a bit chossy in some spots, but an overall nice hike and view. Enjoy!

If you hike the 4th of July Bowl up to the ridge between Richtofen and Mahler and then ascend the west ridge, you'll be in good shape. We did Richtofen a few weeks ago and decided to deviate from that plan and head up the NW Face. Microwave sized boulders would slide or fall off the mtn as you stepped on them and necessary handholds would break to the touch. That peak is chossy!!!! We descended the West ridge that viejo mentioned and found it to be far more pleasant. Have fun! It sure is pretty up there!
