 Sherman - Standard Route
On Sunday, Sepempter 28, 2008, I decided to to give Mt. Sherman a try. I heard it was one of the easier peaks. The trail head is easily accessable from County Road 18 just out of Fairplay. I spent the night at the excellent National Forest campgrounds just off the road. The road gets a little rough the closer you get to the trail head, but my Honda Civic made it just fine. I arrived at the trail head just arfter sunrise:

The "Trail Head" is basically just a gate across the road. The beginning of the "trail" is basically just a jeep road for most of the next 3/4 mile.

I soon passed the remnants of the old Daultness mine. Really a nice example of the mines of the past. It must have been a very prductive mine at one time. It also appears that there is still some active mining going on.

I continued on the the trail. Really a nice gentle slope.

After the 1st mile you finally come to the saddle leading up to Mount Sherman and I was finally off the road and on a trail.

The first false summit:

After I reached the top of ridge, I got a view of the exposed west side of the mountain:

You can now see the valley below with Leadville at the bottom and the Sawatch Range in the distance. A really nice view of the next mountains I plan to climb.

Now came the second false summit.

Then finally the summit.
