This was my 4th trip to Colorado and the 3rd for my wife and the 1st for my son. My wife and I climbed Elbert last year and knew how to prepare for the altitude which is tough coming from Indiana. (lots of cardio!!!!) The 3 of us had made an attempt on Redcloud earlier in the week but my son was having problems with the altitude so we stopped at 13000. We were going to try out Grays but the 4wd road was very rough and we did not think my son could handle the additional milage and wanted to set him up for success so we opted for Bierstadt. As soon as we hit Georgetown we drove up the Guenella pass road which is a very easy drive. And once at the top next to the trail head I was amazed at the view. Walking through the willows(?) and past the ponds was very easy. A little buggy at times but still a piece of cake. Crossing the stream, no prob. After making it up to the top of the 1st ridge and looking back you begin to realize how far you‘ve come and how far the summit is. You then start to make your way past the Sawtooth area which is beautiful. My son started getting sick right around 13500, there were several others hiking that day so my son sat it out and stayed with some others while my wife and I travel on up. We came across a patch of snow close to the summit. After making it through the snow the top is basically a pile of boulders and rock and is a scramble. We were at 13860 and it started thundering!!!!! We did the safe thing and made our way down. A hard thing to do when you are feeling fine and only have about 200 ft to go. But live to climb another day. The last picture is a view from where we stopped. I got a lot of good video and I'm already salivating at the opportunity to go back and mark Redcloud and Bierstadt off of my list. And did it rain? Nope!!! Did it lightening? Saw more than I wanted too. I included a few pictures from Evans, we drove up the next day to check out the view. Summit Lake is a wonder to see. And I included an (inside the car) view.
