 Mt. Massive - East Slopes

I had planned on doing some reconnaissance today to see how much snow is on the Mt. Massive trail -- good thing I started early, because the trail was almost entirely clear! It was a perfect day for the summit, with no wind and 65 degree temperatures.

The trail between treeline and the saddle had a few small snowfields, but they were no more than 50 feet across.

From below, it looked like the route between the saddle and summit may have some snow...

But the trail along the ridge was mostly clear.

I got a good look at Mt. Elbert to the south, and it appears to be snow free as well.

With a good deal of snow still present in the mountains to the south and west, views were spectacular on the hike from saddle to summit.

As usual, cloud started to build throughout the morning. By 1 pm (I was almost down) I was hearing the occasional peal of thunder. Definitely a good one to start early! It seems to take forever to get from treeline to the summit and back down again, not a good place to be in a thunderstorm.
