Mt Antero, Baldwin Gulch th. 7-3-2005
Drove up to the treeline, hiked the trail to the summit and followed the road down. Had a first timer with me so we took it very easy, started out walking at 6:22am (it took us over an hour to drive a Jeep to the treeline, probably would have been faster to just walk...) and summited at 8:58 am. Antero has the benefit of being one of the easiest 14ers thanks to the road, its not the most inspiring hike though. If this had been my first 14er I dont know if I would have been hooked... We had the mountain to ourselves on the way up but on the way down it felt like skipping across 25 in Denver during rush hour, ATVs ATVs and more ATVs and a few regular off roaders. Thanks to all the mining(?) roads this area is hog heaven for off roading and motorcykling, definitely the place I would hang out at if I had an ATV. Does not allow for quiet and peaceful hiking contemplation though. But it sure was easy.
