The 4 wheel drive road to the trailhead was quite an adventure. Maybe harrowing is a better word. Nonetheless we hit the trailhead at about 9 a.m.. It was a beautiful day. The trail is really nice. Had no navigation problems. Pretty much a level 1 trail up until we hit the intersection with the Wetterhorn trail. From here it was quite challenging. We first encountered a steep rounded hill we had to traverse. From here it leveled off until we hit the wall! A series of 4 steep switchbacks that busted my lungs. The trail then swings around to the backside of the peak. August 16 and it begins to snow on us! Coming from central Texas imagine the shock. Once the snow passes it begins to rain. With lightning rapidly approaching, it was time to turn back. On our descent it begins to sleet! The summit would best be served another day. I have been to Sherman and Bross. Umcompahgre is the nicest one so far. Colorado and the 14ers are the best!
