Disappointment Cleaver, 29-31 May |
Third time was the "charm," for my attempts on Rainier. Two tries last year got shut down for weather.
This year, the weather was great.
We started out at Paradise at around 7:30 on the trail up to Camp Muir. Weather down low as cold, snowy and cloudy. Near-whiteout conditions but still navigable considering the route has been wanded all the way to the top. Made camp around 14:30 at Muir and reviewed snow travel and crevasse rescue techniques before bedding down.
Woke up at 00:30, prepped gear and headed out at 02:30. Good cold conditions set the snow just right along the route. Made the Disappointment Cleaver around 5:30 just as the sun was coming up. Continued slogging up the upper Emmons glacier and then over the bergshrund got us into the summit crater and then to the summit by around 10:30. No major issues.
Descended and returned to Muir by around 15:00, made a leisurely dinner of from scratch pizza on my frybake (made my own dough) and turned in.
Woke up, had fried hash browns with pepperoni for breakfast, broke camp and made it back down to Paradise by lunch. It was only during the descent that we learned of the accident on Liberty Ridge, and we had seen search and rescue helicopters flying around, which is never a good sign.
Exited the park, ate at scale burgers, grabbed a shower at the lake bath house near Elbe, and made it back to Seattle.
Here is a video with the highlights of the climb.
