I was in Colorado, Silverthorne, for a family vacation and took the opportunity to do a few Fourteeners with some friends and family. Althought I had already done Grays and Torres previously I never get tired of doing some of the same ones again. These were also to be my 35th and 36th summits, counting some done multiple times. I will never be able to get all 54 but I still do like to keep track of my totals.
In this case it was great I was able to accompany good friends Tim (AR) and Caryn (TX). Although not their first Fourteener, it was their first summit of Grays and Torres. Tim and I and a few others are coming back in September for Long's, Holy Cross, LaPlata and Shavano/Tabeuache so this was great training.
We left Silverthorne around 5:30 AM and were on the trailhead by 6:30 AM. As in many of the previous reports the road was in pretty good shape other than a couple of fairly large holes at about 1/2 way. We had a four wheel drive Suburban and had no issues getting up the road. There were about 10 cars in the parking lot when we arrived so it was easy to park and get started.
The trip up Grays was much as I remembered, a fairly easy initial ascent that got a bit steeper towards the summit but a great trail the entire way, getting the Gray's summit by around 8:45 AM. The trip over to Torreys seemed a bit shorter than I remember, taking less than an hour. We were back at the trailhead by 12:30 PM, just in time to share a few beers with friends (including new 14ers.com member "Crowboy1") we had made along the way.
Having done Democrat/Cameron/Lincoln just two days earlier, also for the second time, I found Grays and Torres to be much easier. Although the two hikes are similar in distance, G-T seemed much easier.
