Last spring I camped out at the base of Star for a few weekends in row and skied the surrounding pass laps. Since it was such a large runoff there was no way to get across the river safely. We gear up and watched a herd of elk feed as the sun was rising.
There was no snow bridge to cross so I quickly cowboy'd up and crossed the river to dismiss any question of turning around. Pretty damn cold but the feet made a full rebound View from the ridge
We Hiked a gully lookers right of the run an summit proper. This put us on the ridge with less than an hr to the top. Summit
We hit the summit around 10:15 La Plata Grizzly
Brian Jeremy rode the line from the top and it was pretty sloughed out after they were through. We headed to a line farther down skiers left and got some great turns. Shot of turns and Star's complex north face
After the face we hiked briefly back to the gully we ascended for some soft turns back to the River crossing
Gully shot that we ascended to gain the ridge and skied back to the river.
I will take a cold river crossing over a long approach any day of the week
