Winter Daytrip: Ellingwood Point
Winter Daytrip: Ellingwood Point Route: Como Road approach Date: January 14, 2012 Length: 15 miles RT Vertical: 6200 feet Ascent Party: Oldschool (Mike) Muzik83 (Bobby) Dancesatmoonrise (Jim) Sunset, Lake Como. Still, we did get the opportunity to see everyone on their way in, just after we passed Como Lake on our way out Saturday. It was a pretty nice day, the company was great, and the mood was festive. Jeff, thanks for putting the large group together for the weekend. Moonset, San Luis Valley, Colorado. West side of the San Luis Valley and San Juan range at dawn. The first old Cabin: Nearing the Lake... Bobby walks across Lake Como; Little Bear Peak rises to the south. Mike and Bobby. We take an alternate route to avoid snow in the trees. I don't recommend it. Crater Lake, Como Basin. The snow surface was quite firm through the headwall getting to the upper cirque. Bobby ascends the upper cirque toward the Ellingwood summit ridge. Blanca Peak. Looking back down to Crater Lake. Mike is at left. Little Bear Peak. Kevin Baker is seen atop South Little Bear Peak, far left. Interestingly, Kevin Baker's group is on Little Bear Peak about the time we're on Ellingwood Point. Congrats to both Kevins, Darin, Greg, and Sarah, on their successful summit of LB / SW ridge. Lindsey. Crestone Peak, Crestone Needle, and Humbolt Peak can be seen from near Ellingwood's summit. Approaching the summit. "Oldschool" relaxes on Ellingwood's summit. Bobby. Talking shadows. Three feet thick. Mike and Bobby on the trail at the far side of Lake Como. We spend some time at the lake before descending into the sunset views across the San Luis Valley. The timing is perfect. Jeff's group is just beginning to arrive. We talk on the trail for a while as the sun's glow paints vivid watercolors across the western sky. Thanks Mike and Bobby for another great trip. And thanks, Jeff, for putting the Saturday/Sunday trip together. It was good seeing everyone. -Jim .

SurfNTurf	Almost missed this one... 1/31/2012 3:27pm ...but glad I saw it, even late. Great photos. I love the zoomed-in one of the Crestones/Humboldt from Ellingwood's summit. One of these days we'll have to actually hike together instead of settling for running into each other on the trail, haha.
