My buddy and I climbed Missouri on Saturday, 16-Jun-07. We ended up not following Dawson‘s advice - we traveled south to the main drainage, headed east up the drainage, then bushwacked up the south face of the ridge. We attained the ridge and traveled along fairly smoothly until we were a few hundred feet north of the summit. There was a bit of a tricky move through snow around the eastside of a rock outcropping. We used our ice axes to assist us. Crampons would have been a great help. Other than that, the snow is patchy. One may avoid most snow patches by detouring into the scree on the west bowl.
We attempted to find Dawson‘s route on the way down, but couldn‘t. Just below the treeline, there‘s a path which heads north across the mountain, rather than go down along the drainage. It was a good path until it was blocked by a fallen tree and a large snowbank. We elected to bushwhack our way down to the original trail.
The first creek crossing at the beginning of the jeep road is really treacherous. Most of the crossing is shallow, but there‘s a deep spot just before you get to the other side. Our truck (Ford Ranger with 4x4) stalled in this spot on the way in. Fortunately, we got it restarted quickly. On the way out, I hit the water too fast and created a bow wave in front of my truck. This force water into the air intake and into the engine, which promptly stalled. Some really nice climbers from Denver crossed ahead of us and pulled the truck out. I arranged a tow to Buena Vista and dropped the car at a mechanic, who changed the oil and cleared the water from the engine. Some locals pointed out the creek is shallowest to the left of the island (as you are going into the wilderness). I urge anyone driving this route to get out and walk the creek first. Note the creek is shallowest where the water flows fastest.
