 Mt. Evans via Guanella Pass
We tried this route last summer and made it to the top of the gully. But because of time constraints, that's as far as we got. So we decided to try the same route again...what a HUGE mistake! First, we completely lost the trail about 30 feet past the boulder off the Bierstat trail. We tried to stay on higher ground to avoid all the water. It worked for the first hour or so through the willows, but after that was a complete nightmare. There was so much deep mud and water no matter where we went...it was unavoidable. We got to just before the bottom of the gully, after losing the trail for about the 10th time, and decided we had had it with all the mud and the water, and turned around. We actually ended up going back to the car and driving to the Summit Lake trailhead and climbing that trail.

If you are not into trudging through the mud and making your own trail, you should be advised to stay away from the Guanella Pass trailhead to Evans. It was a horrible, frustrating, and wasted 3 hours of our morning.

Thanks for the warning; 14ers are hard enough without a mud baptism.

I thought that the willows were kind of fun. I hiked that trail on Aug. 19th and didn‘t have really any issue with the willows. I turned at the big boulder after the creek as mentioned in Bill‘s route description and pretty much followed trails all the way to the gully. Only a few spots muddy, but fine with gaitors and waterproof boots.
