Added by BillMiddlebrook

Location:  Sawatch Range
14ers Served:  Mt. of the Holy Cross
Road Type:  2WD, easy dirt road 1   (0=Paved, 6=Very Difficult 4WD)
2WD dirt to the TH.
Directions:  From Interstate 70, take Exit 171 and follow U.S. 24. Drive almost 5 miles and turn right onto the Tigiwon road. The turn is just before U.S. 24 crosses the Eagle River and starts to switchback up the hillside. The Tigiwon road is dirt and cars can usually make it to the trailhead. Drive just over 8 miles to the trailhead. More information on the Tigiwon Road (#707) can be found on the US Forest Service Motorized Vehicle Use Map for the Holy Cross Ranger District.
Winter Access:  Closed near the bottom of the Tigiwon road. Road is closed from November 22nd until June 21st but they may not open the gate until late in the day on the 20th, depending on conditions or when they get around to it. If you plan on heading there around the time of the road opening, please contact the Holy Cross office of the US Forest Service Eagle-Holy Cross Ranger District at 970-827-5715.

2012-09-22 Road is in good shape all the way to the trail head. Easily traveled by just about any passenger car. I wouldn‘t want a low clearance sports car, but just about everything else should make it! Great fall colors along the way! michaelgrundy
2012-07-18 The Tigiwon road is in excellent condition. If you just pay attention you can easily make it all the way in any passenger car (except a Ferrari). I got a Prius up there in 20 minutes. mspalding  1
2012-07-15 This road has a lot of ruts, but there was always a clean line to take. There was a long wheelbase Audi RS5 at the top, so nearly any car can make this drive, but get there early. The parking lot was full at 4:30AM on a Sunday. ezabielski
2012-07-11 The road closure on US 24 for the sinkhole near Tennessee Pass does not impact this trailhead, you can still access the Tigiwon Road from I-70 and taking US 24 through Minturn. The sinkhole closure is well to the south just north of Tennessee Pass. Chicago Transplant
2012-06-30 Today (Saturday) parking lot was completely full. You would have had to park about 250 yards from trailhead. mikefromcraig
2012-06-22 Road open and Dry. Passable for passenger cars with careful driving. Johnson
2012-06-15 Open, dry...very dry... passable for passenger cars with careful driving. Johnson
2012-03-23 I called the National Forest Service, Holy Cross Ranger District to find out 2012 plans for Tigiwon Road. Here is the official word: Road will remain closed until June 20, 2012 for Elk issues. After June 20th, they plan to open it full time for normal operation throughout the summer. There are still a few loads of Beetle-Kill logs to bring out, but there are no plans to close the road to move them. At worst after June 20th, visitors will experience short delays while logging trucks move. Vort. vorticity    1
2012-03-17 Still has continuous snow except for one spot; bottom mile is just starting to melt out and get thin in places. Dancesatmoonrise
2011-11-28 Closed for winter BillMiddlebrook
2011-11-27 Tigiwon road IS STILL CLOSED , or at least it was this morning when I drove out to attempt to hike Holy Cross. awilbur77
2011-10-19 Tigiwon is definitely open! We were going to climb HC today, but had a blowout before the actual trailhead so we decided to turn back. We did make it about 5 miles though. The road is fairly decent the first 4 miles, but after that gets a little hairy from the logging traffic. Anything with clearance above what a Saab 95 has(pretty much anything) shouldn‘t have much trouble. Snow starts at about 10k. thefirststraw
2011-10-08 Road still closed. Armyclimber
2011-07-09 As the previous post indicates, the road is closed all summer for logging. As of now it‘s open to foot, bike, or horse traffic. It appears that the actual logging activity might only be taking place during the week (unfortunately the road stays closed on weekends anyway). Around the 4 mile mark the logging equipment has damaged the road. A light mountain bike works fine through this section. I‘d imagine they‘ll grade it before the road reopens. Te bike ride wouldn‘t be bad with light packs, but at 8 miles and 2,200 vertical, with ski equipment and overnight gear (and rain), it was tough. Carl
2011-06-22 http://www.vaildaily.com/article/20110622/NEWS/110629951/1078&ParentProfile=1062 MINTURN, Colorado — Forest Service officials said Wednesday that Tigiwon Road will be closed to vehicles through Oct. 15 to allow for tree removal and other work in response to the mountain pine beetle epidemic. tmathews
2011-04-28 Snow all the way to gate closure. Moot though since Tigiwan closes May 1 through June 20 for Elk Calving. cjw
2010-11-27 Road basically closed, but the gate is still open. Might be able to get a 4WD a little ways, but not very far. There was a snowmobile trail to walk up on for about 3 miles or so, then ski, snowshoe or snowmobile only. Snow gets pretty deep past community house - more trail-breaking involved. As of today, there is a ski track all the way up to and past the Half Moon TH. craigjhn
2010-11-13 Tigwon is still open and road is packed snow all the way to the trail head. One nasty pothole, but cars/suvs can make it around. Lots of hunters, so bring some bright clothes. Trail is pretty much snowshoe only, or at least becomes so relatively quickly. csommer69
2010-10-30 Road is iced over for most of the 8 miles. We made it though with 4WD in a Tacoma truck. You will need snowshoes if you do the Halo Ridge route. We didn‘t take them and postholed to our knees and thighs for an hour before turning back. WIclimber
2010-08-30 Minor pot hole and rock bumps. A passenger car can drive it. FredBud
2010-06-21 I drove the road yesterday 1:30hrs after opening, its dry all the way to the trailhead. There are a few downed trees but they are easily passable. yorksman
2010-06-15 Park Rangers say the road will be opened Sunday, June 20th, at noon. slaggbottom
2010-05-29 The gate closure is 0.7 mile up from the bottom of the Tigiwon road. BillMiddlebrook
2010-05-10 Annual Elk Closure is in effect, road is closed May 1 - June 20 for Elk Calving season. Chicago Transplant
2009-12-29 Gate is now locked. Usually opens around 7-7:30am and closes around 4:00pm or a little later. Road is now well groomed and packed down by the snowmobiles and CAT from Nova Guides. Snowshoes are not needed for the road. XC skis would be nice! ++Snow from the TH to Halfmoon Pass is dry, deep pow and very unconsolidated. Kiefer
