Grays Peak Trailhead

Location:  Front Range
14ers Served:  Grays Peak, Torreys Peak
Road Type:  Easy 4WD, good clearance recommended. 3   (0=Paved, 6=Very Difficult 4WD)
Normally itís Rough 2WD to the TH but some years it gets rough and might require 4WD. It always requires good-clearance.
Directions:  Take I-70 to the Bakerville exit (#221). Leave the highway and drive south over to the dirt parking area near the start of Forest Road 189. This is the winter trailhead and, even if the upper road is open, low-clearance passenger cars should park here. Itís almost 3 miles to the summer trailhead. Reach a junction after one mile - stay straight and follow the sign for the Grays Peak trailhead. Continue another 2 miles to the trailhead at 11,280í. There are restrooms and a few dispersed camping spots near the parking area.
Winter Access:  Closed at the start of the 189 road, near I-70.

2011-09-10 The road to the upper trailhead is still rough. Lots of potholes, rocks, and dips. My Jeep Liberty didn‘t have any problems in 4x4 but I wouldn‘t take a low clearance vehicle up that road. I saw a number of cars parked along the side of the road about halfway between the lower and upper trailheads. deeplomassy         
2011-09-10 I know the previous post is that the road was repaired. I‘d hate to see it not repaired. Did not see one car at the trailhead. You need something with clearance. The road has pot holes, large rocks, and other general "off road" things to enjoy. Glad I had the truck with off road tires. The_Godfather         
2011-09-08 The road has been mostly repaired, I drove all the way to the parking lot in my Ford Taurus with little problems on Thursday morning. On the way down at 1:30 pm there was a dump truck bringing in more road base rock to the difficult spot so things should be even better now. gbutler80         
2011-09-03 That spot in the road (1.4 miles from the trailhead) on Saturday was impassable by our Honda Pilot. Didn‘t have good tires, though. Our other party made it up in a two-wheel drive 1993 Navajo with good tread. Unbelievably, we saw a Toyota Camry at the trailhead. Lots of cars and SUVs were parking below. stauffcat         
2011-09-02 That section the previous post refers to at 1.4 miles is getting rough fast. An FJ, Xterra, and Jeep parked below it today. I wouldn‘t plan on getting a passenger car to the TH until this spot is repaired. Carl         
2011-08-24 No problem in a Subaru Forester. There is one rough spot about 1.4 miles below the TH. Just take it slow. If you drive up in the dark, the headlights show the bumps quite dramatically alanecharlesworth         
2011-08-21 This road is getting pretty rough with a 2WD. Really just one bad section but still possible in anything. A jeep liberty ahead took two tries to get through and I made it through with two tries in a Corolla. A handful of other sedans and subarus made it up but a lot parked just below this section. I would not recommend this road if you are concerned with getting some blemishes on a new car. If its 14 years old with great tires like mine then with good wheel placement it is still possible. eagle06    2      
2011-08-19 I would strongly recommend 4WD only, as there are clearance issues and large potholes. I watched a hummer have a little trouble ahead of us, and we were stuck for a minute in our 4WD vehicle. We also saw the oil trail and pointy rock that gave someone a miserable day. dsreynolds         
2011-08-16 There is a section about 1/2 to 3/4 mile below the old miner building that has much deeper and wider potholes than there were a month ago, probably caused by heavy rain on Sunday. I made it to the TH in a Honda Accord and there were only 2 other 2WDs there but most 2WDs stopped and parked along the road below that section. One person got stuck and I saw what looked like oil in the road after that section from someone bottoming out. dmdoug    1      
2011-08-03 The road leading to the trail is in decent shape. I took a low clearance Buick all the way to the top, and only really felt uneasy over a tiny stretch of the road. As long as you take it slow, and pick the best route, low clearance vehicles can make it all the way to the top. mattyanderson26         
2011-07-18 The road had quite a few potholes and a few dips where a low-compact car had to be extremely cautious. I made it to the trailhead with my low-compact car while driving slowly and around the potholes. ashlee03         
2011-07-17 For clarification, because some people will drive just about anything up anything they possibly can, the road appears to have been graded and is in GREAT condition. There are a few places you would have to be very careful in a 2wd car, its very doable. centrifuge

2011-07-10 Road dry all the way up. I made it with no problems in an ‘07 Honda CRV, and there were lots of low clearance, 2wd cars up there. A few spots are pretty rocky and would require some thinking in a low clearance 2wd, and there is a small creek crossing just below the parking lot that should be taken slowly. Crowded too! Maybe 10 cars at 5am, and 75 cars at 10am! RJansen77         
2011-06-29 Road clear all the way up. Parking lot open. Various spots in trail covered in deep snow/melting slush. Would recommend waterproof boots and map as trail is indistinguishable at times. blackdovestudios

2011-06-05 There is a lot of snow after the burnt out building on the right. By next weekend the snow will be patchier, but at the trail head it can get deep. You can walk Grizzly gulch halfway with shoes, then you hit the creeks and will want snowshoes are skies after that. 2011-06-04 The road is currently open about a mile above the standard winter parking lot (Grizzly Road Junction). There is a small parking lot at the current closure. A vehicle with good snow tires and 4WD may be able to make it up another several hundred vertical feet. BLong         
2011-05-31 Parked at Bakerville due to ice and deeper snow on first switchback. Above the first switchback the road is melting out fast, and will be passable to the Grizzly Road Junction after a few more days of heat. Above Grizzly the snowpack deepens, with the exception of the usual dirt patches on the south/unshaded aspects near the runout of Kelso‘s North Line. After that the snow is DEEP. Gonna be a while before the upper trailhead road melts out. Hope that helps! KansasBoarder         
2011-05-30 The road to Gray‘s Peak trailhead was definitely impassible on 5/30/2011 by 4x4. The road had just enough snow and ice that, without chains, its just not do-able. However its a nice hike up the road to get to the trailhead. You can drive up a few hundred feet but then it was all snow/ice. To avoid having to reverse back down, save the 10 minutes, and just park in the parking lot. ***Make sure to hike on the dirt road as much as possible to avoid breaking through the melting snow and soaking your boots in the hidden puddles/streams under the snow and having to turn around...not that I did that...but I might have*** michaelkostal         
2011-05-21 This trailhead is still fully covered in several feet of snow. Save for .2 miles of it, there is no way to drive it. Given the recent snow and existing snow, I don‘t see it opening up for weeks, if not a month. I‘d recommend snow shoes if you walk up it. epende    1      
2011-05-10 On my way back to Denver after a little skiing at A-Basin I decided to turn off at bakerville exit to check out the road to G&T. I got about a quarter of a mile up the normal dirt road with just a little bit of snow on the south side until I hit a giant bank of snow covered the road. Didn‘t go any futher but im sure it continues all the way to the summer TH...It really needs to heat up. keith_stone
