Route: Traverse From Grizzly to Boulder
Posted On: 6/29/2024, By: QuietBear
Info: The entire Baldwin Cirque is in summer conditions. Rock quality is solid near Grizzly and deteriorates towards Mamma. Quality on Mamma is mixed; similar to the Bells. Do not underestimate the length or sustained scrambling required on the ridge between Grizzly and Mamma. Several reports say "Easy Class 2" or "a nice ridge run". You will not be running on this ridge, and only some sections are class 2. Especially with spring snow blocking some bypasses, many parts including the knife edge section are difficult 3 with one or two class 4 moves with current snow conditions. Traverse to Boulder is beautiful and truly easy class 2 ridge running. There is an abundance of muddy, slick, and sinking ground at lower elevations, especially near the lakes and willows. The creek is running very strong and Baldwin Creek 4x4 Road (Forest Service Road 277) has a good amount of water running over it in places. Mostly 1-2 inches, but perhaps 8-10 in one spot. Mosquitoes are in full bloom in the forested areas. Getting out of my car for a second resulted in 10-15 intruders.

Route: From Baldwin Gulch via Boulder
Posted On: 2/24/2024, By: daway8
Info: Four of us did Boulder Mountain and Mt. Mamma from Baldwin Gulch TH retracing over Boulder on the way back. The two in our party on skies (kyrawhitworth and RyanOlsonDDS) had on skis with skins and ski crampons right from the start. Me and yaktoleft13 booted until the first ice flow then wore snowshoes to treeline. First ice flow is currently the worst but snowshoe crampons and ski crampons worked well for our team members. Skiers stashed skies a little below treeline (started getting too rocky for them) and snowshoes stashed at treeline. Everyone booted the rest of the day until returning to the stashes. Bomber trench in place now - portions of which we managed to poach the remnants of someone else's old track - thank you whoever you were! Fairly windblown above treeline but just enough snow on the narrow parts off there ridge to make it dramatic (though can bypass down to the left if you don't like snowy exposure like I do). Stellar day with blue skies. Wind was just enough to be annoying but not overly problematic.

Info: Road to Antero was well trenched, I didn't need snowshoes until branching off of 277, from there the snow was deep and soft until just past treeline when I started up the ridge. Ridge was easy, mostly rock hopping to summit. Nice day, very warm and little wind.

Info: The Mamma summit register needs a new pen/pencil if anyone is headed up soon. The register for Boulder Mtn has a pencil. Both have wet paper.

Route: Baldwin Gulch Loop
Posted On: 6/28/2023, By: JasonKline
Info: I followed the loop from https://www.14ers.com/php14ers/tripreport.php?trip=17134 which began at Baldwin Gulch, ascended the northeast slope of Boulder, traversed to Mamma, traversed the ridge north of Mamma, them descended northeast to Baldwin Gulch. The route was summer conditions except (1) The east side of the ridge north of Mamma still held snow. This was easily avoided by staying on ridge proper or the west side of the ridge. (2) While descending northeast of the north Mamma ridge, there was a brief (100 feet or so) stretch of unavoidable snow at treeline. It was simple enough to walk through the snow safely without any equipment. It was pretty windy from Boulder to the end of the ridge north of Mamma. The descent down to Baldwin Gulch indeed contains sections that are both pretty steep and covered in slick pine needles. It was definitely shorter than returning back over Boulder or descending to the east, but it was slow going and some portions of the descent were unpleasant "class 3 grass."

Route: 277 -> East Ridge
Posted On: 6/17/2023, By: LetsGoMets
Info: Drove up Baldwin Gulch Road to the 277/278 split at the creek crossing. Hiked in 277 to the mine and then climbed up to the east ridge of Mamma. Couple inches of snow fell the night before made for slick rocks up to the summit. On the way down, got hammered with snow so there is another inch or so to add (and bailed on Boulder as a result). Still did it in trail runners and would do it again. Some snow fields to cross near the mine. Didnt use traction.

Route: Ridge from Boulder Mountain
Posted On: 6/16/2021, By: desertdog
Info: Hiked the ridge from Boulder Mountain. No snow. Summer conditions. Smoke was not too bad. If you have a decent 4wd you can easily drive up and park at the blocked road past 279. This saves 1.5 miles each way. As described in several trip reports take the (blocked) road past 100 yards past 279 as a short cut.

Info: Fairly windblown ridge from Boulder, and also descent to the unnamed mine road south of Mt Mamma. Then about 4-6 inches of snow on road, with holes and rocks under it. A few clear areas but not many.

Info: Nice trench up to 4wd trailhead, there are debris fields in the usual spots, but a lot deeper than other years. snow is crusty below treeline. Above treeline there was excellent snow and maybe 6" of fresh stuff which made the ski down a lot of fun.

Route: E ridge
Posted On: 5/1/2011, By: d_baker
Info: We started up Baldwin Gulch Rd (CR 277) from the winter closure (CR 162). Some vehicles have driven up the start of the Baldwin Gulch Rd, but only a short distance of maybe 100yds or slightly more, but only to be stopped by too much snow. I don't see where this is an advantage at this point. The road is mostly continuous snow, and was firm for us. From the junction for Baldwin Lake & the Antero route, we headed SW into the Baldwin Lakes drainage. Snow stayed firm beyond this junction, but we eventually put snowshoes on less than a mile from junction due to new powder. Overall, firm snowpack with maybe 3-4" of new snow on top. After stashing snowshoes near the mine at 12,586', we took the S slopes to gain the E ridge of Mt Mamma. New snow of ~6-8" inches was bonded with a firm crust layer underneath. Kicked steps up ~30 degree slopes to ridge. Ridge was mostly windblown.
