7/14/2023 Route: From Governor Basin Posted On: 7/14/2023, By: slawrence2011 Info: Hit a deer on the way to Ouray and likely blew out the engine. Look out, and look out deer! Made it a couple miles up the road and decided to do some hitching this weekend and still try to ski in the basin. Late start around 730 due to low traffic. Realized the direct road into the basin is signed no trespassing. Lower basin is mostly melted, and is mostly steep grass through cliffs. Upper basin is nice and snowy, a couple routes to ridge possible on snow, I had time to ski both. Tried to go to T5 on ridge, but becomes cl 5 and loose as others have said. Will try to figure that one out Sunday. Managed to ski close to the road by aggressively linking snowfields and taking off skis a number of times. Only the upper ski is really worth it at this point. |

5/28/2023 Route: Northeast Couloir Posted On: 5/30/2023, By: supranihilest Info: From the governor basin turnoff we took excellent snow to FS-853-1D (warning: private property) and cramponed up to the Mountain Top Mine, then swing around easy terrain under Saint Sophia Ridge and under Mendota's north side. The northeast couloir is visible past the summit and made for chill 40 degree snow climbing to the summit ridge. The summit is a short distance away. We descended the couloir and made our way east towards "T 5". |
