5/31/2022 Route: Bent Peak from Carson City Posted On: 5/31/2022, By: ScottLovesRMNP Info: This is an easy Class 1 hike from Carson Pass, five miles up Wager Gulch Road. Unfortunately, the road is terrible. My Corolla wouldn't have made it 20 yards, so bring a tough vehicle if you don't want to walk the road. No snow on the route. |

11/28/2020 Route: Via Wager Gulch Posted On: 11/28/2020, By: supranihilest Info: Wager Gulch Road is currently impassable to vehicular traffic. From the bottom to Carson Pass it's about 5 miles. I started from the car in microspikes, figuring there'd be ice under the snow. There are old tire tracks for the first .9 miles or so past the parking area, and I was able to boot another .75 miles past that. I put on snowshoes at that point. Snow on the road was variable. Down low it was almost entirely shin deep hoar. Up higher it was anywhere from glassy hoar to punch crust to solid slabs to wet mush. From Carson Pass I took the now closed 4WD road up. The route description on the site is wrong - the road is closed to vehicular traffic. (Also the route description is plagiarized from climb13ers.com, but that's another matter.) I kept my snowshoes on for the first few hundred feet up Bent, then when things dried out more I took them off and booted the rest of the way to the summit, which went from tundra to talus. The summit is flat, somewhat large, and has like 10 summit cairns on it. I don't know which one has the register. I continued over to Carson Peak but if Bent is the only peak of the day just return the way you came. Someone please go make use of my trench! I found microspikes useful for the lower road and believe flotation to be mandatory. You'd have a super long sufferfest without it since the snow is deep in this area. I brought an ice axe and used it on Carson Peak but it wasn't useful on Bent. There are also moose in the area - the road was absolutely plastered with moose tracks and moose poop, so keep your eyes peeled for any moose that might want to ruin your day. |

9/12/2020 Route: Bent Peak from Carson City Posted On: 9/12/2020, By: denvermikey Info: If you have a good 4wd you can drive all the way up to the pass. This is a legit 4wd (not AWD) road. Route was straight forward and snow was more of an annoyance than a hindrance. Brought gaiters and micro spikes and didn't use either. |

7/3/2020 Route: Carson Pass Posted On: 7/6/2020, By: IHikeLikeAGirl Info: Quick update on the parking and marmot situation on the pass. I heard a rumor of only 1 parking spot and lots of marmot issues. 1. Plenty of parking. Photo 1 There is a dirt lot at the top of the pass, with room for at least 10 cars (and spots elsewhere along the roads, if needed, doubtful). No need to park on the tundra. 2. The marmot rumor was true. Probably best not to park in the "cut out" single parking spot (across from the dirt lot). That spot is very close to some marmot dens. We saw a lot of marmot activity over there. Photo 2 One car was parked in the "cut out" spot and reportedly they used moth balls (and possibly other deterrents) and had marmot issues during the night. I used "Critter Ritter" and my partner used "CR" and moth balls on his vehicle. Neither of us had any issues, during the night or any evidence of animals during the day. Please, do check under your hoods and under your car before driving off. Summer conditions for Bent Peak - 13580B. |
