Route: Northeast Ridge

Info: We took the standard route to the Sherman/ Sheridan saddle. One major snowfield below the fallen Hilltop Mine. Didn't realize that the old cabin up there had also fallen in the last few years. From there we followed the road to the snowfield beneath the saddle. There is bootpack all the way up, but gets steep at the top. Microspikes are a good idea. There is a chute right next to it that people were glissading down. It was definitely steep with a hard bump people were hitting halfway down. From there we followed trail segments up Sheridan. As it curved around the southeast side of the mountain, I got a good look at the southeast "route". The trail looked pretty dry down and shorter distance to the saddle with Peerless. A lot of trail segments and the mining roads beneath looked melted. After summiting a couple of minutes later and taking a break, we headed down to avoid storms building. Nothing ever happened except some slight graupel on the way down. It remained mostly sunny. We followed the trail between Sheridan and Peerless saddle until it disappeared into a snowfield. The snowfield was too soft for glissading, but held our weight to walk across to a mining road. The mining road was mostly dry, but ended short of the Dauntless Mine. We walked down scree/rocky slopes to the mine and connected back up to the main Sherman route. Then it was a fairly quick walk back to my vehicle below the gate.

Route: Northeast Ridge

Info: The road starts off dry then turns into packed snow and varies from snow to dry. I made it past Leavick Mine and through a couple small snow drifts but didn't chance it on the last one that had tire marks as it went on for a ways and I didn't feel like digging my car out just in case. Not far past that was another snow drift that no one has driven past yet. I parked 0.8 miles from the gate closure at 11,700ft. The trail varied from bone dry to packed snow also all the way to the top. I followed the road up to where Hilltop mine is/was, then lost the trail and basically had to scale up a cornice to reach the Sheridan-Sherman saddle. From there it was fairly easy to reach the top. I lucked out with 0-5 mph winds. The way back down I went down the other side and it was so much easier, up until it reaches a 'road' that goes back down to the Dauntless Mine, the snow covered the entire road in spots and made it sketchy to walk across that hard snow at an angle with a minor drop off on the right. Overall with the loop I did it was 5.8 miles round trip. I added a couple photos of Sherman too for conditions. Also, I wore microspikes the whole time but I was tempted to take them off for half of it cause it kept going from dry to snowy

Info: Can drive nearly to the summer trailhead over packed snow with AWD/4WD - a snow drift blocks further access but makes for a really short trip This area is really windswept, snow is firm crud. Didn't need flotation. Picture 1 is parking, picture 2 is mt sherman

Route: From Peerless, Descend NE Ridge
Posted On: 9/9/2018, By: supranihilest
Info: There are trail segments and some cairns going up Sheridan's south side but they're disjointed and ultimately not very useful to follow for most of the way up. You can really just pick your own line, it's all Class 2 and not terribly steep or loose. I did not come up the northeast ridge but I did descend it en route to Sherman, and it is in far better shape than its southern twin. There are good cairns and a good trail, though it is braided in spots. There is some loose rock but overall it is quite stable.

Route: Northeast Ridge

Info: Only snow was along saddle with Sherman and approach to saddle, as well as east ridge of Sheridan. See Mt. Sherman condition report too. Could have crossed to east talus slope and made it down that way from summit, instead of following same route I took up, if I had realized I could avoid the snowfield hiking down from the east summit. As it was, it snow seemed to get deeper as I went east in it, a few hundred feet below the summit, so I followed standard route down. This can save you a good amount of hiking, although I don't know the conditions on the talus, but if it's the same as the northeast ridge you should be fine. to See photos from Sheridan summit, and from trail to Sheridan summit. In contrast to summit of Sherman, there was very little wind, although it was gusting on the way up/down, but nowhere near as bad as on Sherman. Once you're above the Sherman-Sheridan saddle there is little snow to contend with, on the northeast ridge, unless you want to take the shortcut I described up or down.

Info: Cornice on the saddle between Sherman and Sheridan. Snow on the trails but it can be avoided. I didn't need traction or flotation for Sheridan.

Route: NE route, using

Info: Followed the Northeast Ridge route, except used the "Alternate Route" shown on the topo map. Basically straight up the east face. The lower section of the route is mostly clear of snow, but have to cross some patches. Only the east face is clear of snow, the South ridge is still pretty loaded. I descended the south ridge, it can be done without getting on the snow except for a 10 yard section, but its both steep and icy. Would recommend an ice axe or microspikes during that part.

Route: Basin to Summit Direct
Posted On: 5/21/2016, By: Grover
Info: Mt. Sheridan is in great shape for a ride or ski (much like Sherman). Trailhead parking area is still ~11,025 ft., but more vehicles trying to push through the initial snow bank will help that. I skinned into the basin using the normal 4x4 road, then made a direct line for Mt. Sheridan off the road. Snow coverage is great through the entire basin. I was able to skin up to the exposed rocks just under the summit (i.e. the standard summer route) and then hike up to the top. The snow was very firm off the summit, due to the cold temps and high wind. The best turns where further down the basin where the snow was softer allowed for easy carving.

Info: The White Ridge/Sherman/Sheridan/Peerless/Horseshoe/Finnback loop still has some snow along the route, but it can all be avoided easily.

Route: Southeast Face
Posted On: 3/2/2015, By: jwagner
Info: There is a lot of snow up in them there hills right now. Sheridan has enough windblown areas with exposed rock that you almost avoid the deep snow all the way from the mine at the top of Fourmile Creek Rd. ( where the gate is ) to the top of its summit. Sherman is totally packed with the white stuff and the summer route to get up the southwest ridge is totally filled with snow. The cornice between Sheridan and Sherman is epic right now as well. The southwest ridge itself looked windblown as far as I could see from the top of Sheridan.

Route: Southeast Slope
Posted On: 2/15/2015, By: CUaaron25
Info: Climbed Mt. Sheridan and Peerless yesterday from fourmile creek. There is a perfect boot/snowshoe pack all the way up into the basin. We turned left in the upper basin to hike up a few exposed rock bands/slopes to get to the base of the SE face of Sheridan. We went straight up the SE face on loose talus until we intersected with a trail that switchbacked up the windblown face. We had snowshoes but didn‘t use them all day.

Info: Summer conditions, dry and no snow once you get to the Sherman / Sheridan saddle. The glissade down from the saddle is wicked F U N!

Info: Mt. Sheridan is entirely dry. The only snow to deal with is the snow field just below the saddle (ridge) that the standard route for Sherman/Sheridan go up, and even in this there is a hard-packed trail from all the foot traffic.

Route: E face
Posted On: 12/18/2010, By: d_baker
Info: Drove to just beyond the Leavick mine, at the first wide pull-off on the left. No problems in 4x4 jeep getting there. Snowshoed from there to the gate of "standard route" of Sherman. Cached shoes. Hung a left (S/SW) at the Dauntless Mine and headed up the slope from there. Mostly wind scoured. Hiked the low angle, mostly devoid of snow, E slopes to summit of Sheridan. A bit windy. (Probably sustained 20's) Blowing snow. A bit cold. But a good day in the mountains! Planned to go down the NE ridge to Sherman, but the winds and snow took its toll on us, so we descended our ascent route, went home. (Pictures l. to r.)
