Peak Condition Updates
7/3/2017
Route: Southwest Ridge
Posted On: 7/3/2017, By: HarkNeal
Info: 99% dry. 25-50 foot long snowfield in the usual spot (north flank of Colorado Mines Peak). Snow is well-packed, but was a little slick coming down.

Route: From Berthoud Pass

Info: Hiked Mt Flora, Mt Breckinridge and Colorado Mines Peak yesterday. The forest road from Berthoud pass was still pretty snow packed with some postholing even at 8 am, very slushy on the way down. Some traction would have been nice but didn't need snow shoes. There are still some big snow fields to cross on the Flora trail between the mines peak road and the first saddle. The fields were still pretty deep with some waste deep post holes. Amazing conditions all around, the trail is probably 80% free of snow.

Info: About 85% of the trail is dry, most of the remaining snow is located on the road up to CO Mines Peak and it is packed down pretty solid. Didn't posthole much and I got an anti-alpine 11am start (perfect weather day). If you're looking for a short hike to get up high without tons of slush, this was pleasant.

Route: CDT from Berthoud Pass

Info: Arrived at Berthoud Pass around 0710, lots of parking available. Hiked up the access road to Colorado Mines Peak, still a good depth of snow until about 3/4 of the way up, but mostly frozen. Micro-spikes were handy to maintain good traction. From the summit of Colorado Mines Peak we hiked over to Flora, very little snow on the trail. Lots of impressive cornices along the ridge so we gave them a wide berth. On the return we cut across the west side of CMP to rejoin the access road, still a lot of snow in places here and since it was warming up snowshoes were great to prevent post-holing. Weather was great, sunny with a few clouds, temps were mild, wind was moderate. Wrapped up the day with lunch at Tommyknockers in Idaho Springs!

Route: east bowl
Posted On: 3/21/2017, By: SchralpTheGnar
Info: Skinned up the access road from Berthoud Pass, to just below summit of Mines. Walked the ridge over to Flora, which was mostly dry. Dropped into the east bowl down to ethel lake around 8:30am, snow slopes were completely frozen, scary ski down to the lake, then booted back up the bowl. Probably 2 hours too early.

Route: Southwest Ridge from CDT
Posted On: 6/25/2016, By: HarkNeal
Info: Route is dry except for one decently-sized snow field over the trail on the northern slope of Colorado Mines Peak. Snow is about 1-2 feet deep and filled with posthole tracks from previous hikers.

Route: CDT from Berthoud Pass

Info: A fair amount of snow near the bottom of CO Mines Peak near Berthoud Pass. Spent about 30 mins post-holing before the route dried up. Conditions should improve dramatically by next weekend. Once above the snowpack, the hike to Flora is completely dry and trail is in great condition. Wildflowers are starting to come out!

Route: Colorado Mines Peak

Info: Started from parking lot at 4:30 with intentions to traverse to Flora and/or Eva. Reached the top of Colorado Mines by booting up the side of the ski slope the following the road for two switchbacks. 1-2 inches of fresh snow, with windblown spots of 4-6 inches, and somewhat supportive crust underneath. Reached the summit in near white-out conditions and didn't want to risk the ridge with visibility and cornice dangers. Followed power line straight down, back to car by 6:00.

Route: From Berthoud Pass

Info: Sustained winds between 35-45mph the entire day. Temps probably between 35-40 degrees. The weather station on nearby Colorado Mines Peak (600ft lower) recorded max gusts at 58mph. On top of Flora I am sure we had gusts over 60mph. Along the ascent from the trailhead and on the ridge northeast of the summit there was light snow in small patches. Easily walked over or avoided. No snow on the summit. I wore trail runners and was very comfortable.

Info: Just an Fyi they are doing construction on Berthoud Pass. Lots of stopping and waiting. I got on the pass at 7am and work had already begun.

Route: Northeast Slopes
Posted On: 6/16/2015, By: Goat9
Info: On Sunday, June 14 I traversed the Continental Divide from Berthoud Pass to Parry Peak. I skinned up the Colorado Mines Peak service road to the final switchback and then transitioned to hiking. Able to hike on the Divide all the way to Mount Flora with only a few snow patches. I then skied the Northeast Slopes of Mount Flora and regained the Divide to head to Mount Eva. Northeast Slopes still have continuous snow for skiing, but large wet slide debris at the bottom.

Info: Ascended over Mines Peak and returned using the shortcut trail which I believe is the CDT. Snowshoes were very helpful below treeline on the ascent and descent. Above that, we only encountered a couple short snowfields near the Flora summit. There are also some lengthy snowfields on the shortcut but all had enough boot tracks to not be a real issue. Easy early season warmup.

Route: Southwest Ridge

Info: From Berthoud Pass, it‘s almost continuous snow all the way to the summit of Flora, following the ridge crest. With the milder weather, I found snowshoes to be helpful as early as 9am. Be careful on the summit, as it is completely covered with snow (you can‘t see any rocks) and blends in with a huge cornice hanging off the east side. Also, watch out for those cornices hanging off the ridge while traveling between Flora and Colorado Mines Peak. They look like they‘ll break off if a bird landed on them.

Info: There was a couple of snow fields headed up to Colorado Mines Peak; no snowshoes or spikes needed. From there to Mt. Flora was all clear!

Route: Via Berthoud Pass

Info: Climbed Mt Flora from Berthoud Pass Sunday the 26th. Colorado Mines Peak snowy up to tree line. Used bootpack trail, no need for floatation but microspikes helped. Route was grass/rock/thin snow for remainder of the route. Ridge line corniced to the east but easily avoidable.
