Peak Condition Updates

Route: Berthoud Pass

Info: Post hole city for the first 0.75mi or so. There's still hip-deep snow in the treeline but once you're above it, it's all dry. Didn't go for Eva since that ridge still had a lot of snow on it. I used traction but snowshoes seem like too much since the majority of the trail is dry

Info: Consistent snow until about halfway up CO mines peak, skied down into the gully between Mines and the 12700ft point as the main trail is clear of snow after the first mile or so (we were on skis). From this point on the trail was almost completely clear until the summit where we were able to ski.

Info: snow was firm from parking lot up to treeline in morning, solid bootpack up road to Mines, then followed power lines up. Softened up in the afternoon but didn't use snow gear. From upper part of Mines to Flora route is mostly dry with minor snow patches and the big drifts on towers. Took bypass on return to avoid re-ascent of Mines. The trail is mostly still buried in snow but there's a few boot tracks and snow had softened up to not require traction or worry about slipping off. Sank in just a few inches and all on the downhill so not bad. Didn't use any snow gear besides poles. Could get mushy at the start as overnight temps warm.

Info: Route is dry above 12,300. North faces are very corniced. Climbing the snow slope above the pass is safe.

Route: View from CO School of Mines Peak
Posted On: 11/10/2024, By: HikesInGeologicTime
Info: Did not summit Flora, just CSoM on skis. Flotation highly recommended on/around School of Mines Peak. Looked like a sliver of the trail might have been bare past the saddle with Flora, but there was a lot of white along the ridge. Hikers might want to wait until the wind blows more of it away, but skiers should have at least another few days to enjoy some pleasing early season conditions.

Route: Berthud Pass to Mt Flora, Mt Eva

Info: Getting close to 100% summer conditions. No winter gear needed from Berthud Pass parking lot to Flora, Eva, and most likely James & Parry Peak too. Only one very short, flat, easy snow section that is melting fast. Super windy but other than that, great morning!

Info: Started around 6:45 as the third car in the lot. You need flotation until the saddle at 12,100 (taking the Colorado Mines Peak bypass), but past that it is bare and bootable. Great views, as expected, but a warm day made it so that the last 400 feet or so down were too wet to glissade even just by 11 AM. Only saw two parties going up, tons of people on the way down. Clocked about 5.5 miles, 1900 vert. Fun little day, but I spent a little bit too much time trying to glissade, lol.

Info: Climbed Colorado Mines Peak and Flora today for some repeats - fantastic day up high with bluebird conditions at the start with a storm rolling in at the end. Snowshoes on at the start and wore throughout the entire day - pretty deep snow right now for this area.

Route: From Berthoud Pass, Colorado Mines Peak

Info: I took the road up to Colorado Mines Peak and then continued on to Mt. Flora from there. The snow on the road is well packed for the most part, I left my snowshoes in the car and had no regrets. The trail is pretty well defined the entire way except for a small section coming off of Colorado Mines Peak on route to Mt. Flora. I kept relatively high on that section and never encountered snow that was too deep. After this section the trail is mostly a mix of dirt/rocks and snow all the way to the summit of Flora. I did not ever take the part of the Mt. Flora trail that bypasses Colorado Mines Peak, so I am not sure how that trail looks.

Route: South ridge
Posted On: 1/1/2024, By: sunbleached
Info: I traversed from Berthoud Pass up Mt. Flora, Mt. Eva, Witter Peak, and Parry Peak. All three were in much better shape compared to the wind-stricken fun that occurred the week before. I went up Mt. Flora after hitting Colorado Mines Peak. From this south ridge, there are no issues, and the trail is extremely easy to follow with only minor windcrusts. Most of the snow was scoured off. The north ridge of Mt. Flora was nearly completely covered in wind-hardened snow slabs - the kind that CAIC said in their forecast is the only kind of slope you should watch out for. Yay! Anyway, I stuck left (west) and made it down with only a couple crossings of the slab. Mt. Eva and Parry Peak were simple by comparison.

Route: Trail from Colorado Mines Peak
Posted On: 12/21/2023, By: sunbleached
Info: I initially wanted to tag Flora, Eva, and Parry, but the conditions were a lot worse than forecasted. 20-25 mph sustained winds, temps without windchill around 15F, maybe a couple clicks colder. Getting up to Colorado Mines Peak was easy and straightforward with plenty of nice firm snow on the road. The trail from Colorado Mines Peak was generally pretty straightforward and solid, with not as bad wind crust as expected. Visible even within the wind and pellet-snow whipping around. Lots of rime ice and crusts after the saddle with Colorado Mines Peak, though the ridges were relatively free of snow due to the wind.

Route: Berthoud Pass/CO Mines
Posted On: 11/18/2023, By: HikerGuy
Info: Very little snow up there. No gear needed. I went up the road and over Mines on my way up. I hit the map summit and lidar summit of Flora. Lidar summit is about 1000 feet north of the map summit. Descended the summer route, it is still safe for now but any new snow could change that.

Info: Started at 6.45am, loads of space in the car park, vault toilets too. Wind kicked in about half way up, there were moments of respite though so not too bad! Incredible 360 mountain views!

Info: Hiked Mt Flora, Mt Eva and Parry Peak in trail runners. Summer conditions. All remaining snow is 100% avoidable (and should be avoided, as it is located in cornices).
