Red Peak

Info: Followed below TR for an excellent off the beaten path to get this group. Road was easy to follow most of the way up Red Peak. Easy traverse across to Hoosier. Couple snowpatches from Hoosier to Red Mountain, one of which I broke out the microspikes and ax for. With how wet the snow is I doubt you'd start sliding, but the slope off to the west is pretty steep and goes a looonng ways down. I personally would want both for the next couple weeks until it melts. Way down from Red into Horseshoe Basin was something. Snow was terrible. You could avoid a lot of it by weaving. The willows toward the bottom were also pretty bad. At one point I resorted to just walking in the creek itself, my shoes weren't getting any wetter! Info: Summer conditions with some very minor patches of snow. We went up and over Madonna Dome and went around it on the way back. Great day and the trail is in great shape. No summit register up on Red but there is one on Madonna Dome 🤣

Info: Almost all summer conditions (see the report for Hoosier Pass) except that on the descent from Hoosier Ridge towards Red Peak, you have to either go a long way left to go around a large snow field, or cross it at a convenient place. I walked fairly far left on the way over and crossed it at a narrow and not too steep place. I returned not quite as far over on the way back and found a location that was steeper but with sun cups quite supportive of getting onto what used to be a cornice. All in all, a very nice hike -- with great views of Bald Mountain to the NE.

Info: Full summer conditions. Tacked on Red Peak A to Hoosier/Red Mountain C. On the way back from Red Mountain to Hoosier Ridge, I angled climber's left to where a band of rock coming off Hoosier's summit turned to tundra ~200' below the summit ridge. From here I was able to traverse over to the Red Peak/Hoosier Ridge saddle with only a short stretch of steep sidehill talus (which was a little loose), and minimal extra elevation gain/loss. Easy trek up to Red Peak from there. On the return I took the ridge direct back to Hoosier Ridge's summit and back to the pass.

Info: Climbed from camp down at Willow Lakes. Took the grassy slopes to the south side of the upper Willow Lake and followed those up next to the southernmost zodiac spire. Boulder hop from there to the Red Peak summit. There is still a good amount of snow around and above Willow Lakes, but it is mostly avoidable on the route I took. I crossed one small snowfield the entire way. This is a great way to get Red if you are camping down at Willow!

Info: Aside from a bit of snow on the descent of Hoosier Ridge Summit to saddle (which wasn't too much trouble) this part of the route was almost entirely dry. For info on conditions from Hoosier Pass to Hoosier Ridge Summit see Hoosier Ridge Summit Condition Report.

Info: Floatation helpful for the first 3/4 mi above Hoosier Pass, especially later in the day. Patchy snow up on Hoosier Ridge.

Info: Joined the large crew going up to Hoosier Ridge from Hoosier Pass then a couple of us went on to Red Peak A. Enough traffic along the trail that several of us didn't bother with snowshoes but a few in the group used them. After reaching the start of the ridge most of the people using snowshoes stashed them since the rest was fairly windblown except small sections. Going over to Red Peak A there was one steep snowfield just off Hoosier Ridge but still had rocks sticking up and was largely dry after that. Looking over to Red Mountain C (didn't go there) it looked mostly good except that one typical steep snowfield that could cause problems. Noted that Silverheels looked like it might possibly be doable from this side at the moment given the somewhat light looking snow coverage. Will add several photos.

Info: Some hard wind crust coming down from Hoosier Ridge for maybe 100 feet, then virtually no snow at all.
