7/13/2019 Route: Hourglass Posted On: 7/15/2019, By: mlewis Info: Hourglass was easily passable on rock as of 7/13. Three snowfields on the final summit slope are also passable on rock on the right - the third snowfield looks like it blocks passage, but there is just enough rock to get by. Lower trail up to the boulder field are mostly clear, a few snow patches to cross. We didn't use flotation or crampons/microspikes, just kicked steps. A minor about of post holing on the way back down. Trail to treeline is mostly clear, a few snow patches, again no flotation needed. |

7/6/2019 Route: Hourglass Posted On: 7/8/2019, By: dbolton Info: I went up chiefs head but had a good look at the hourglass route. Snow on trail from 1 mile below Lion 1, but not hard to follow boot tracks. Normal route by Trio would need traction but going left about 0.25 miles I found an easy way up that headwall. Hourglass looks technical still! No snow free path that I could see. Photo attached. |

7/20/2017 Route: Hourglass Ridge Posted On: 7/21/2017, By: CoHi591 Info: Beautiful day. This is absolutely a gorgeous hike in a really spectacular place. Easy hiking to Lion Lake #1. Water is running high but there are a handful of safe places to cross the creek near trio falls en route to Lion 2. A few snowfields still between Lion Lakes and gaining the ridge, but all low angle and soft/shallow, so no problem. There is still snow on the face but can be easily avoided climbing right. Returned the same way I came to retrieved stashed snow gear so can't speak to the Boulder-Grand Pass route. |

7/21/2015 Route: Hourglass Ridge to Boulder-Grand Pass Loop Posted On: 7/27/2015, By: dwoodward13 Info: Headed up Hourglass Ridge from Lion Lakes Basin. A few snow patches around the lakes, one which I believe required a detour from the "standard" scramble around Trio Falls. Otherwise snow free the rest of the way to the top. Took a descent down to Boulder-Grand Pass. Far climbers left gully down to Lake of Many winds is snow free, but loose. Did have to cross a few snowfields to loop around the lake and one more to get all the way down to Thunder Lake. Nothing major however. Saw 0 people until meeting back up at Thunder Lake, and nice heard of Bighorns |

6/21/2014 Route: Hourglass Ridge from Lion Lakes Posted On: 6/24/2014, By: Wildernessjane Info: Climbed both Mount Alice and Chiefs Head from Wild Basin. Approximately a mile after the turnoff to Lion Lakes, we started encountering large snow drifts and streams running everywhere making it really difficult to stay on the trail. In hindsight, it had probably turned into a stream. Once on the ridge leading up to the saddle between Alice and Chiefs Head it is possible to stay off snow for most of the remainder of the hike (stay on the spine of the Hourglass Ridge). We did not end up using any traction but it could be helpful on the approach if the snow is hard. |
